Who is on the Autobot and Decepticon Logos?

I tried a search but didn't find anything. Anybody know?

Surely we have some kind of origin that could explain this...

The Autobot logo is based on Prowl's head scuplt and the Decepticon one is from Soundwave.

Thanks for that. So any idea why prowl and soundwave were the "chosen ones"?

I didn't know about Prowl! Wow! But I do know that the Deception faction symbol is based on Soundwave's face as toy makers originally intended him to be Decepticon leader.

That's about as far as my knowledge on the subject goes, but have a browse through TF Wiki, that should fill in some of the gaps. I started with G1 Prowl's page and moved around from there, through 'Autobot', 'Insignia' etc. Then do the same with Soundwave. :thumb

I always thought it was based on ancient Transformers.

Possibly in more modern fiction, but when Transformers was first created as a brand, the original faction insignias were loosely based on the Prowl and Soundwave head designs. I know in the Marvel comics there was The Last Autobot who very literally sported the Autobot logo as his own face. Again, depends which fiction you subscribe to I suppose, although obviously the toy boxes were the first places to feature them back in 1984.

Can you provide any solid proof of that?

Fans have speculated and theroised that for years, but to this day I havent seen anyone post any solid evidence that proves that.

I can see how the Con logo looks like Soundwave.

Crap! I wish I could! I forgot where I heard it. I watch a lot of Transformers DVD's then watch them again with commentary and forgot where I heard it from. I will go through them and pinpoint where and inform you once I find out. :D

I can only add further speculation, in that the release of the toy of G1 Megatron was delayed in some countries outside the US due to their firearms laws. I know that Megs didn't come out over here in the UK until 1985 and it was spotty distribution at best. Maybe Hasbro thought that it would be more convenient to make the leader someone who did have a toy out in the early 'waves' or at least lean towards the fact that Soundwave might have been in charge of the 'Cons, if not exactly their outright leader.

Again, I have no basis for this in actual fact, but it does represent a kind of logic to me at least, despite the fact that the comic and cartoon made no indication of this in the slightest.

I definitely have to find that DVD I heard that on. Google has yielded me nothing but speculations as well. Guess I found my next botcon question for Hasbro!:D

    kool

Seems reasonable, but remember, the molds for these toys pre-date the fiction and the choices for who became the leaders.

What I would like to know is which company came up with the faction symbols, Hasbro, DC comics [they were first approached by hasbro with the toys] or Marvel comics?

Are we talking about toy history, or history within the TF story-lines?

OK class, your homework for tonight is to find the earliest recorded use of the Autobot and/or Decepticon logo in any form.

At IaconOne in 2006, Bob Budiansky mentioned that at one point Soundwave was up for consideration to be the Decepticon leader. Some of the early Marvel TF art released in the UK shows this, such as issue #1, which features Optimus Prime fighting Soundwave.

As you can see, Soundwave superior, Prime inferior.

Yes it does in a way. The last Autobot from the G1 comic has the (drum rolls please...) Autobot's insignia as his head.
