This Sunday, I'm doing 7 hours of (voluntary! I'm not a felon!) community service, helping out at the Downtown San José Rock & Roll Half Marathon. I'm handing out water and protein drinks to runners as they pass by at around the 9.5 mile mark. A few of my friends are doing the run [I can't run well because I took a ski pole to the knee two years ago (no, I'm serious. Screw skyrim for making people think I'm lying)] but I'm participating with them by giving free drinks while Rock & Roll plays nearby. Have any of you done marathons before? It doesn't have to be an actual marathon, it could be a half marathon like this one or a 5 to 10 Kilo run.
Funny you should mention the Rock & Roll half marathon, my wife did the 10k run in Montreal this year and wants to do the half marathon next year. I'm pondering trying out the 10k run myself, I love running, but never considered running in an event before and seeing all these people last weekend was awesome.
There's a ton of good runs, marathons, and even cycling and cross-country ski endurance races/events in your area, I could ask and get you a list of some of the "best", if you'd like.
I used to run a lot, but after doing Tough Mudder in April I've cut way back on the running to concentrate more on cross training for similar obstacle course type events. The interesting thing is, when I do get out for an occasional run, I haven't lost any of my speed. In fact, if anything I think I'm actually faster now. I haven't run more than a few miles at a time since April though, so I'm not sure how the endurance is holding up.
I've been meaning to but haven't gotten to it. My girlfriend actually did Halves for the Rock & Roll Marathon here in Seattle in '10 and '11. Tough Mudder and Warrior Dash look fun though. Might be more tempted to do those.
Warrior Dash is fun, but because it's only a 5k there are a TON of people who do it. You end up waiting in a line for every obstacle. Smaller waves spaced further apart might help it, but obviously they'd make less money that way.
I've done a few. Though, I've never ever trained properly for the event. I keep saying, next year, I'll actually train. But I just don't. So, my best time for a marathon is 5:45ish. I'm about ready to do the 2012 Honolulu Marathon this December. I'm gonna do this annually, till I can't run no more. Oh, the first one I ever ran was Dec 14, 2008. My 30th birthday. the next one I ran was Dec 13, 2009. So, the first day of my 30th year, I ran a marathon, and the last day of my 30th year, I ran a marathon. Heres a pic of my participation medals , the small one is a half-marathon (hapalua is half in Hawaiian). The two big ones are the North Shore Marathon. And the rest are Honolulu Marathons.
That would be awesome! I'm also pretty close to Ottawa, so sadly I missed the Army run a few weeks back.
Holy madré de... You and I share the same birthday! Well, I'm 1994, but still! And nice medals! I'm volunteering for this with my NJROTC unit, of which I'm the Administrations Officer and Yearbook chronicler, so there will be pics of the run!
In a perfect world I'd have the time and the energy to train myself for marathons. I'll see if I can even start and maintain an exercise regime before I'll think that far ahead.
damn i'm tired. Woke up for work at 3:45, ran around setting up water for three hours in 50 degree weather, only breakfast was an energy bar, the energy drinks sponsoring the event were at a different station, and got lost trying to use public transportation to get home. I just woke up from a "10 minute cat nap" that i started six hours ago, and my sleep cycle is messed. at least i got seven hours of community service, a lunch date, and an upcoming movie date
Hey bro, a good majority of runners do it for fun and not looking to be top ten or so. And one of the main reasons we come back for more is the community support. So even though I run different races, I gotta just say thanks for your support!!
I have never run a marathon before but may sign up for the Louisiana 1/2 marathon in January. I prefer suffering on the bike than on my feet!
Well, I have been wanting to watch all the Avengers lead-up movies and then The Avengers... Oh, you mean the other kind.
