    Sunstorm or Sky-bite?

Sky-Bite seemed like something from Power Rangers more so than Transformers.
And Sunstorm was from a failed comic book but doesn't seem as lame as Sky-bite was in the RID show. But since I don't know too much about either I look to you guys to judge for me.

Sunstorm is "faux-cool", with a mystique created as a result of him being an exotic, Japanese-exclusive toy, compounded with "invincible bible-spewing nutjob" characterization in the DW comic that screamed "Oh so cool look look you love Sunstorm so cool look." Sky-Byte, by contrast, was a breakout character of an otherwise funny if forgettable series fans gravitated towards for his actual personality, as a loveable loser who tried his hardest with the unquestionably unique quirk of being a poet, instead of being lionized as someone that you were supposed to think was cool because he was a toy from Japan.

I had no idea anyone cared about Sunstorm.

The only TF whom I can out-and-out say has a cult following is Starscream.

I'm only even vaguely aware of the name Sunstorm.

Meanwhile, Sky-Byte was the most popular character on a cartoon that introduced a lot of fans to the franchise.

    No contest.

Sky-Byte would appear to have the bigger fan following as Sunstorm wasn't even place in the final five for the 2012 TF HoF fan vote.

    Indeed, sir!

Before Dreamwave, I had no idea Sunstorm even existed. After Dreamwave, I wished he didn't. He was just another in a long line of Simon Furman's nigh invincible, long-winded, scripture-quoting uber villains. Completely boring and completely forgettable.

Meanwhile, SkyByte was never intended to be a serious threat, and he struggles with the idea that he's a constant failure. He's fun, poetic, entertaining, goofy, and . . . well, very entertaining! Great singing voice too. ;)  SkyByte wins. No contest.

I don't care about Sunstorm and Sky-Byte is cool I guess but I never watched RiD.

But Animated Sunstorm is definitely the best.

I like Sunstorm better than Skybyte. Only because it is a character from G1 kinda. It was a cybertronian scene when 3 seekers take of and the animation colors were off to make it seem like there were more enemys. Although I did like them 3 more before everone named them, I liked to think of them as the mystery jets/seekers.

I loved the Skybyte figure but the character was terrible!

. . . . . Furman had absolutely nothing to do with Sunstorm, and never wrote him at Dreamwave or IDW . . .

I voted Sky-Byte purely out of principle. Because screw Sunstorm. He's a terrible repaint and a stupid character.

The only reason I care about Sunstorm is it's one more color to add to the rainbow seeker army. :)

Sky-Byte. He got on the shortlist for the HOF this year, so I think he has a bigger cult following then Sunstorm.

Something like that, definitely. My only interest in Sunstorm is his outrages color. If I look at my MP/Alt collection then iGear's Sunstorm just stands out because of the screaming orange color.

But as a character...I prefer the Animated version of Sunstorm over G1.

Now, Skybyte...he's one of the few RiD characters that was entertaining and memorable.

    ^ This.
    ^ And this.

I knew nothing of Sunstorm before he cropped up in DW, but I do know I got utterly bored of him very quickly. I may not be as big a Skybyte fan as some but I can see and understand the appeal. He earnt his fans rather than us being told he was cool 'just because' like Sunstorm was. He's the Drift of his day to me.

I disagree with your "expert" analysis. I read a DW issue with Sunstorm in it back in '04, in the middle of a 20 year period when Transformers was a thing of the past to me. I loved the character. I love him even more now that i'm back into Transformers. He's a background seeker with a great personality, whereas Sky-Byte looks like he's a guest star from Power Rangers. Oh wait, every Predacon was a Power Ranger reject. My bad.

You are exactly the sort of person Sunstorm was targeted at.

In that case, Sunstorm is another in a long line of boring uber villiains in the same vein as Simon Furman's uber villains. :)
