Who had the worst happy ending override?

TLJ Luke Skywalker's attempt at rebuilding the Jedi was a spectacular failure brought on by his own making, and may have contributed to the rise of the First Order.

AOE Optimus had his Autobots hunted down by the people he protected for three films.

Whose was the worst fate, the disaster of one's own doing or the brought on by others?

Planets were destroyed by the 1st Order.
Only a handful of Autobots died due to human intervention (along with a substantial piece of Cybertron).

    My vote goes to TLJ

AOE for sure. Not because they had it worse, but because it was dumb as hecking frig.

TLJ had an actual story reason, regardless of if you like it or not (and you don't have to) and tried to make something of it. The gravity of the situation is fairly well-established and is the backbone of the conflict. They hit the reset button with some tact.

AOE was just a brain-dead attempt at a soft-reboot. "We need literally everyone besides Optimus, Bumblebee and Megatron gone, so they all just died off screen because humans are evil for no reason." Completely asinine, and the responsible parties either die unremarkably or, most insulting, get a slap on the wrist for their atrocities.

Things may have been worse for the good guys in Star Wars, but they were undoubtably stupider in the TF movies.

Happy Ending Override - TV Tropes

It's where a film has a (often hard-won) happy ending, but the sequel throws it away in favour of a dark scenario which puts previous efforts for naught.

I was speaking in-universe, but you make a good point.

When you say worse, do you mean more extreme, or less well executed?

TLJ I thought did a great job with Luke's story arc and was a pretty great movie (with some pacing issues and separate minor nitpicks) that handed off the baton to the new generation of heroes.

I still haven't watched all of AOE or TLK (mostly clips on youtube) but it sounds like it neither movie were very good (if fun at times) and it was so funny to me that we see Optimus fly off at the end of AOE and then just drifting frozen in space in TLK. I don't even know if I call that a happy ending override, what did he think was going to happen? We already know Cybertonians can't survive the cold like that (see Movie 1 Megatron).

    Neither one is really worse.

The thing is in both cases that can be part of life. Powers at be can betray reliable allies. The universe can become a much violent place in an instant.

I don't think either one is stupid though. As someone who has ancestors and family members who have survived genocides, I can assure you that the plot of AoE and the fallout from DotM is very, very believable. I thought it was quite well done actually.

Neither of them really got happy endings to begin with though?

Luke helped defeat Darth Vader and the Emperor, but the Death Star II was never the whole Empire. Similarly with Optimus. He may have defeated the Decepticons but there are still other domestic and foreign threats to deal with, pretty sure that's part of his ending speech in DOTM. It's not like the films ended with them going to peaceful retirement homes in the Tibetan mountains to find themselves. Further conflict was always a possibility.

I kind of wonder if Kruger simply took that ending speech from Prime at the end of DotM and used it as a plot point for the next film.

Not only do Prime's allies turn against him, but Megatron's last coherent words are, "Who would you be without me, Prime?" To which Prime replies, "Time to find out." But he never truly does find out! Sometimes we don't find out!

In the real world acts of heroism and valor get subverted and trampled on. Reliable allies get betrayed for selfish reasons on the part of the treacherous. War criminals and evil tyrants sometimes live out the rest of their lives in a mostly peaceful manner. Veterans who survive brutal wars may become victims of other tragedies later on.

    The Last Jedi.

There's never been a proper happy ending in the Transformers movies. Sure the Autobots win and stop whatever the Decepticons are doing but it never had that sense of it really was the end like ROTJ had.
