As a kid, my Transformers experience was pretty much limited to Armada and Energon. (I know, not the best series to start out with). It wasn't until the 2007 movie came out that I really got hooked. After that, I started watching the original G1 series and absolutely loved it. It kind of makes me wish I had grown up in the 80's.

I just recently watched a couple episodes of Robots in Disguise, and the whole series just strikes me as very, very strange.

Autobots fighting Predacons? A holographic flight attendant girl? Megatron has six alt-modes? (One of which is a giant hand)

    And the names!

    X-Brawn?
    Sideburn?
    Slapper?
    Gas Skunk?

Am I the only one who finds this odd? I mean, comparatively?

Well you can blame the names and factions on the US translations and Hasbro :p
But yes it was a bit quirky. The Japanese like to insert humor into their shows, as well as cute girls :p
The giant hand alt mode had an explanation if you watched the last few eps of the series.

It was a rewritten anime used for filler, of course it would be kind of odd. They were just throwing out some new ideas.

    Weird-ass names though.

It's odd it a kind of batshit awesome way. Every episode had something entertaining. Sadly, when it wasn't funny, it was mostly boring.

RiD was an adaption of Transformers Car Robots. Now Car Robots came at the end of Beast Wars era and Takara's own Brave Series, a toyline based franchise similar to Transformers but more a Super Robot genre.

While Mainframe made Beast Machines Takara made Car Robots. Hasbro turned down Transtech sequel after Beast Machines and had imported Car Robots to be RiD.

This the first time Hasbro imported a pure Takara Transformers series. Headmasters, Victory, Zone, Beast Wars II and Beast Wars Neo were not imported for adaption.

This show almost got me back into TF's. Never (or will) like Beast Wars but this seemed ok. Didn't care for Autobots VS Predacons though. That makes no sense.

Is it true that the U.S. version was altered because of September 11th, 2001? I read that somewhere. But I have no idea about any truth behind it. And yes, I'd I'll admit that RID was kinda strange. But I still enjoyed watching it.

Yea but eventually the other Predacons were useless so it was back to Autobots vs Decepticons for the most part.

RID was an awesome time for me, it was a new generation of Autobots that I could buy, I remember seeing the figures for the first time in TRU and freaking out over the Autobots being back and then I looked down and saw a brand new Optimus Prime figure, and actual Optimus Prime and not another version of Primal, I nearly passed out from the awesomness.

But yea, it was strange because of the translation/re-dubbing of it, but I still love it and the toys were amazing.

It was a pretty weird show, but the original molds from it were fantastic.

Yeah I remember RID debuted Monday September 10, 2001, and was pre-empted for sometime thereafter. Not to mention Air Attack Optimus Primal, clearly a Beast Machine toy was released under the RID banner.

Its what you get from a "filler line" although I thought it clearly beat out Armada.

I enjoyed RiD when it first came out. It's what got me back into collecting because at that time they FINALLY brought back vehicular modes and old fashioned cel animation... which was something I had missed all those years during the Beast Era of the 90s. (I didn't really like Beast Wars much at first originally because it was not vehiculars and I also did not enjoy the CGI very much because it felt like I was watching someone play a video game.)

That said, there are silly times in RiD I can't for the life of me tollorate. What I really enjoyed most about RiD was the fact they had FORTRESS MAXIMUS! :D  I had always wanted to watch Transformers and see Fortress Maximus often in the show, and I felt robbed when the series ended after the Rebirth. So RiD really appealed to me when they brought back Fortress Maximus and the Decepticon Combaticons. (Ruination)

I just took it for what it was. An awesome new transformers series that featured Autobots for the first time in a while. Oh, and silly at times too.

well the story writers and animators did their best to incorporate all the mishmash toys from different toy lines takara found still usable for the filler line. you know the show is pretty much just gonna be silly fest when most of the decepticons/predacons simply ignored the robots in disguise premise and have whatever alt modes they damn felt like. i don't know why the autobots kept up the charade when shark that floats in air, giant skunk, giant toad, giant flying squirrel, giant hand were daily occurrence in the city.
