I think Fred Savage would be better than Shia.

    1) The young Fred Savage in Wonder Years looks so much like Daniel Witwicky.

    2) Fred looks more like Spike compared to Shia who doesn't look anything like Spike.

My answer to any question regarding my preferred actor is always the same, regardless of genre, role or subject matter; Milla Jovovich

Definitely think Shia was the perfect fit for the role. But if I did have to choose someone else for the role, I would have chosen Justin Long (Accepted, Dodgeball, Live Free Die Hard, Mac commercials).

Justin Long would have been way too damn old. I mean come on, a 30 year old man playing a teenager wouldn't be realistic.

I'd have cast Josh Hartnett as Spike and Olivia Munn as Carly.

Shia is about as good as anyone else I could think of for the role. Just needs to the be the every man sort of character so people have something to relate to around massive robots. The kind of guy that lots of action will happen around but not the type to pick up a machine and go all Rambo or Die Hard.

Justin Long would have been a great pick. I really like how Shia played the role. Joseph Gordon-Levitt would have been good too.

Overall, SHia embodies the sort of goofball akward knucklehead needed for the role... this ain't 1980. Overall, he's the one actor in the movies that I think they picked the right guy for. Everyone else I have recasted in my head several times, but there's very few people that I could think of to play Sam Witwicky.

I think Shia was great for the role. Michael J. Fox would've been good if he were younger, though.

Micheal J. Fox would have been too old in 86 when the cartoon movie was new.

i agree with Roadbuster88 because if you've seen 17 again and charle st. cloud he has become a better actor and the only other person i could think would fit. he is serious but kinda goofy

I actually think Shia is the perfect fit for the character Bay wanted Sam to be in this movie. Awkward, spazzy, and slightly geeky this is all Shia LeBouf

Shia's proven that he can handle acting in very demanding roles, with movies that require a lot of physical action and are very fast paced. That's not an easy feat, especially for someone who was relatively new to films with the original Transformers film. And his persona is very much the kind of character Bay was looking for, so I would say he did extremely well. I liked him.

Also, his character isn't Dan or Spike, so I think the point of Shia not looking like either of those two is moot. (And really, who'd want to?)

Like the others here, I think Shia LaBeouf has been perfect for the role of Sam Witwicky - the wit, the goofball humor, the bravery, the physicality, the drama. He's been able to handle the character's diversity extremely well, in my opinion.

I'm not exactly sure who I think could've played Sam instead of Shia, though. Maybe actors like Michael J. Fox or Justin Long if either of them were young enough for the part.
