Killed during Sentinel's betrayal, or to die during the fight in Chicago.

To die during Sentinel's betrayal. It added a nice sense of gravity. If the twins were in the movie I'd rather have them get the ax in that scene and have Ironhide die in Chicago though.

Sentinel's betrayal. Good way to make us think the character is a dick from the get go.

What would've been better if if he'd actually had a chance to fight back & was still overpowered. Getting shot in the back by a supposed ally, someone you're PROTECTING, is just cheap.

It's cheap, yes, but it says a lot about Sentinel's view of Ironhide. He was shot in the back because Sentinel likely didn't fancy his chances should he be forced to take on Ironhide in combat.

ALL they would have to have done to make his death acceptable, is have Optimus (in the final battle against Sentinel) grab his gun, put it to his chest, and scream "this is for ironhide" and let Sentinel rust away. It would also remove the need for Optimus to be such a bastard when killing Megatron who just helped him out.

    ^This.

Ironhide's death in DOTM = Cyclops death in X-Men 3: The Last Stand.

While I was sadden about Ironhide's demise, Sentinel's actions really made him a real villain! From that scene onwards, I was waiting for his ass to get kick.

To side track a little, just before we got to that scene (Autobots escorting Sentinel) I was telling myself that this movie couldn't have been so straight forward i.e. simply protecting Sentinel from the Decepticons! That "twist" was indeed cool - out of the whole movie! :)

While i liked the twist, I would've preferred if it had been the twins that had died (if they were there). I wanted Ironhide to die on the battlefield, not get a cheap shot to the back. It's unforgivable and...

I don't know if I can go on. But then I wouldn't be hating Sentinel with a deadly passion, would I?

    Oh my god. Again?

Optimus killed Megatron because Its Megatron. The mass murdering arch enemy whose responsible for the killing of many of his friends. Oh but hey when this mass murdering bastard says "Hey lets form a truce where I'm in charge and we still screw over the humans" Optimus should have just said "Sure" and gave megs a high five I guess.

And saying "This is for Ironhide" would sound cheesy.

Killing the twins would not have had the same impact at all. Sentinal had to kill a character that people wanted to live.

    They made the right call.

Ironhide was one of the strongest, most popular characters in the movie-verse. Killing him off instead of some nobody was a good storytelling decision, and also the most logical way he'd go out (because let's face it, he's got more guns than a third world country, and he likes using them - Sentinel may have been able to 'win' but he'd have been mauled so badly so as to make escape inmpossible).

Hypothetically, if someone else had died by sentinel (probably sideswipe, I'd guess) - the only way he'd have died in the finale would have been holding off a horde of 'cons to buy the autobots time to get to the Pillar. They'd be racing to it, and he'd be singlehandedly (perhaps with Dino, dunno) fighting an army, and those giant walkers. Only when the pillar is gone he'd finally allow himself to succumb to his wounds and die surrounded by his friends. Probably get a moment with lennox, since they seemed to be close (apart from when he forgot Ironhide existed. that's the main problem with how it was handled. It needed closure: a mention, a eulogy - vengeance.)

Nothing, his death was great. it was how it was handled afterward that needed work. ironhides death wasnt even mentioned by any other characters in the movie. I thought that was really poor editing, and one of the major flaws of the movie.

Personally I would have had the Twins die in the novel, and have Ironhide bite it helping NEST defeat Starscream. Would've adding gravity and drama to both characters deaths. Both felt slightly cheap.

See, Starscream was the one death in this movie besides Sentinel that really worked for me. He went down like a whiny bitch. Sounds like Starscream to me. Sure, he could've gone down fighting Autobots, but, in the end, he'd have run away the moment it got too hot. He picked on the weak, lesser insects, and went down like a bitch when one managed to kill him. Felt totally in character to me.

I think Wheelie and Brains were implied to have died, and it would've been a cool way to go out, but there wasn't anything final. Ship needed to blow up or something.
