I count RID Prime and Magnus as two of the greatest Transformers ever made, but he's not a great toy all by himself.

Titanium is just ok, I don't buy TFA or the unofficial stuff, so the only other one I can comment on is G1, the limitations of which are well-known to most collectors, but I still like him.

TFA Magnus certainly seems to be well-liked by the Animated crowd.

Real toys don't need fancy upgrade kits to be good.

As much as I like City Commander, I voted for RID Magnus because he has a functional trailer. And he combines with Prime.

if you can still get it at a good price, get classics um and the city commander set. if thats too expensive, rid um is 2nd for me and if that too is hard to get, animated um's my 3rd choice.

If the City Commander set wasn't such a piece-former with an excessively sized gun, I would have voted for it since I really do LOVE it.

If Titanium Magnus was three times bigger, made in plastic and had more details/articulation, then I would have voted for it instead since it's technically the first ever G1 accurate single-bot Magnus not to have a silly little white Prime who combines with his trailer.

That means I gave my vote to Animated Magnus. One solid bot with a clever yet instantly recognizable resemblance to his G1 counterpart, huge, heavy, awesome transformation, tons of additional bells & whistles like pop out guns, and one of the top 3 most accurate show-to-toy translations of the entire Animated series. He's actually my favorite figure from the entire show so far.

RID doesn't even register on my radar.

I will list how I rank them, best first, worst last.

    City Commander
    RiD
    G1
    Animated
    Titanium

Animated ranks very low on my list because IMO it's just not that great of a toy... I hate the shoulders, they bug me... The weapon is too small. But overall he is a good figure with lots of firepower.
I like City Commander the best cause it's Ultra Magnus plain and simple. AND he's posable. Not 100% perfect though. They could have ditched the BFG and went for a more "Functional" trailer.

    My ranking for UM:
    1) City Commander—definately get him if you already have a Classics UM (can use NP or OP in a pinch). If he is too expensive #2 is a great substitute.
    2) Animated UM—One of the best characterizations of UM ever produced. Yeah he doesn't have a trailer but he will be easier to hunt down and and looks great in both modes.
    3) RID UM—A pretty cool figure that really shines when combined with RID Prime. Closest to G1 alt mode than the others. Beware the tires on RID UM have been known to split.
    4) G1 UM—A great figure for its time but there are better versions out there. Limited articulation (arms basically) but is a fun one none-the-less.
    5) Titanium UM—I am assuming you are talking about the G1esque figure and not the War Within OP repaint of UM. I don't have that figure but it closely resembles G1 in truck mode but has a poor robot mode. This is the only UM figure from your list I don't own so I can't really say anything else about it.

    G1 all the way baby!
You get a white (plague and heat resisting) Prime, you can transport the autobot cars and it transforms into a massive rolling brick.

City Commander plus the Classics Magnus is simply incredible, but will set you back quite a bit. Animated Magnus is great and easier on the budget, but you dont get the same novelty of armoring your Magnus. Either way you do well.
