I was thinking about this last night driving home from work,

The transformers have two distinct tag lines,

'More than meets the eye' and 'robots in disguise'
The difference is that for the first these are vehicles or robots that are more than what they appear to be. They can use the ability to change forms to become more powerful, fly or whatever and really separate as being transformers.

The second has a more espionage feel to it. The Transformers can blend in with the vehicles or animals on the host planet. This would really serve no purpose on Cybertron, where every one has an alt mode, or if they have been accepted as transformers on the particular plant as being able to change forms. (re: speed planet)

Throughout the 26 years, different series have had different focuses. Gen 1 Was a lot about the disguise, but after the movie, it become apparent that they were not trying to hide anymore.

BW was a little of both for the first season then again reverted to more powerful alt modes over stealth

RID was really based on the autobots living on earth undetected.

    Armada- little of both
Energon - No mention of blending in with earth.
Cybertron- Blending in on earth, no where else.

    Which do you prefer?

I guess the more than meets the eye line works better for me. The disguise aspect only goes so far: how many times is that blue Viper with the flames on it going to transform into Sideburn before the 'cons figure out its him in disguise?

I like both. Robots in Disguise pushes the "they are among us" idea that done right rocks hard, while "More than Meets the Eyes" is a good catchphrase for the whole "not just a vehicle, but also a robot" concept that underpins the whole line.

I prefer "More Than Meets The Eye."

And it hasn't been 26 years yet.

More than meets the eye, like you say the disguise part pretty much died down and the alt modes just seem to change their abilities for the most part.

I like "More that meets the eye" only because it sounds better than "robots in disguise".

Well, a Gundum could put on a Gorilla suit (a large one) and be a "Robot in disguise"

So, I'd go with "More than meets the eye." It sounds even cooler when Peter Cullen says it.

The "robots in disguise" phrase has always amused me. If you take it literally, the line itself seems a bit rediculous: why would a robot need to wear a disguise?

But more amusing is that it brings to my mind an image of the Decepticons wearing fedoras, overcoats, and the Groucho Marx-style gag plastic glasses with the fake moustache.

Robots in Disguise definitely doesn't fit for trannies. I agree.

Don't forget G2's "More, MUCH MORE, than meets the eye." A little overboard on that one. Hey, "if it ain't broke..."

Oops! Well, my point is, it was a change that wasn't necessary. It's cool that TFs have 2 catch phrases that are equally valid though. I can't really pick one over the other.
