I'm switching from a desktop to a laptop and want to make sure my replacement is at least a step up and not a downgrade. Problem is, I can't decipher Intel's chips and speeds anymore. I think that's their goal. Anywho, if you could let me know if the Dell specs are better than the Sony's I'd appreciate the assistance!

    My 2 yr old Desktop:

    Sony VGC-RC320P
    Intel Pentium D 940
    2GB 533MHz DDR
    400GB RAID 0 7200RPM SATA HDD
    NVIDIA GeForce 7600GT (256MB)

    The Dell Laptop

    XPS M1530Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T5850 (2.16GHz/667Mhz FSB/2MB cache)
4GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz (2 Dimms)
    320GB 5400rpm SATA Hard Drive
    256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT

I was on the right track till I saw my D 940 is a 3.2GHz processor and the Core 2 Duo says 2.16, so I'm thinking my D 940 is faster. Am I right in thinking that?

And in the 90s I was great at this stuff, but the naming conventions were simpler too. Thanks in advance!

The newer one will be a metric shit-ton faster. The processors are "slower" because... it's a core duo, there are two where one was once before.

so does a 2.0 gig dual core mean that it'll perform like a 4.0 gig processor?

couple of factors here besides clock speed:

    1. DDR ram smokes SDRam in speed.
    2. The old HDD is at 5400RPM, the new is at 7200RPM. The data will stream faster.

The C2D will distribute jobs among 2 cores, not one. Sure the 3.2 can brute force tasks, but the C2D will allow for seamless multitasking. You can easily burn a DVD, surf YouTube, and leave Photoshop open.

The new machine will make the old one feel like a brick .... but again, it all depends on what you use the laptop for.

Internet, MS Office, and dvd's ... the upgrade might not be worth it.
Multimedia editing, general multitasking, etc ... go for it.

The increase is somewhere around 50%, meaning your 1.5GHz Core2Duo processor is fast as 2.2/2.3GHz processor, with lesser heat generation.

Thanks for the help guys! I really appreciate it.

I want to use the laptop for all the basics as well as multimedia production and for moderate gaming like Warcraft. Not looking forward to Vista, though. :)

Core 2 Duo means 2 processors in one....Core 2 Quad means 4 processors in one....

and also, Core 2 is like the next evolution of the Hyper-Threading technology Intel had.

and i'd go with the laptop...
