My favorite game out of them has to be San andreas. If not that then probably Vice city would be the best.

I'm caught up between San An, and IV, IV looks much better, but you had more vehicles, area, and all that schnit, plus when you jump out of the heli and planes you didn't flail your limbs like a turd but you could aim where you were going. I have all games except 1 & 2 including the two Stories games, and I was really hoping they'd release a San An stories but guess they never will. I also don't get how Rock Star Games could let the DLC be exclusive to only 1 console, that really got me disliking them, if it wasn't for Sony with their Playstations they wouldn't be who they are today.

San Andreas is the best IMO. GTA IV to me was a major step backwards in the franchise, yes it looks pretty, but thats about all it has going for it.

I picked 3 for nostalgic reasons. I've played 1 and 2 and thought it was just fun to fool around in the game because it was open ended, but I remember thinking it would have been cooler if it took the same 3D perspective as Driver. Years later 3 comes out. I finish the first mission, then I look around and think, I can do whatever I want now. That feeling was so new to me and that's always been the big appeal to me for those types of games. Nowadays people look at other sandbox games and call them GTA clones. It's not so much copied or cloned in my opinion, as much as natural evolution of gaming.

edit - Favorite for me is 3, but best would be San Andreas because of all the leaps it took in gameplay. 4 killed it with friends calling all the time wanting to do things which just slowed the whole game down if you even bothered trying to keep up with it. That and 4 had no jet pack or parachute.

This. GTAIV was a major letdown because it was such a back-to-basics approach. Sometimes that can be fun, but just made IV boring.

I like SA but I gotta say 4 just because of the realism in it (the cars crashing them is just soo much fun :) )

the new Liberty City one looks good too

I still like VC the best, just for that awesome eighties atmosphere. It has really dated though...SA is another goldie with how huge that game was and how much it had to offer, but I didn't like the ghetto-parts with the beginning and ending, the middle in the other cities and country side were far more interesting. GTA4 did an amazing job at world building and representing NYC, but it really had the fun sucked out of it.

having only played SA and GTA IV, gotta go with IV.

SA was way too tedious with the body building stats. You don't have to do that with IV.

I have a severe love/hate with the GTA games. I love the open-ness thats fun for a half hour or so blowing shit up and getting lots of cops on you but the mission style and awkward controls ruined it for me. Its a game I have to be in the right mood to play but i'm never in the right mood for it. Same goes for the Saints Row games. I played Vice city and 3 a little bit and at the time enjoyed GTA 3 a tiny bit instead of hating it straight away.

Also I find open endness too overwhelming I love my games linear

Yeah that was replaced with all the "friends" who would call up and want to hang out. ...and then call back saying you never hang out with them. I tried keeping everyone happy when I played, which just made me unhappy. It would have been better if I could work them up to a certain point and have their approval bar locked so it didn't need constant maintenance.

Loved Vice City, but I was absolutely thrilled with the sheer insanity of San Andreas. My first playthough was epic.

I can still play San Andreas. I can't seem to get into Vice City anymore.

Overall I'd say Vice City. GTA:SA comes in second, with GTA3 coming in third. I didn't find GTA4 to be very fun to play at all. I put 20hrs into it and just quit playing. Haven't had any urge to put it back in the disc drive since.
