which G1 style optimus prime is better?

    Encore reissue

    or

    Takara reissue circa 2002

    Or are they exactly the same?

    I think the takara reissue has the long smokestakes where the hasbro doesnt

    the 2002 Takara reissue is better IMO because the Encore version has a lot of mold degradation

    TFC #0 has a blue Roller, whereas Encore's is silver.

    Nobody mentioned a Hasbro re-issue.

    not the TFC reissue #0. I am comparing encore with the 01 takara reissue that comes in a red box.

    Get the 2002 New Year Special reissue. Both this one and the 15th anniversary reissue from 2000 have the best quality among all Prime reissues. And you get extras to go with it too.

    I switched out the stacks on my TRU Comm. Prime w/ a minty set of G2 Prime stacks from the flea market for $5. If I didnt already have Prime, I'd get the encore version, for the box and the stacks. I'd stay away from the 25th anny version for the color issues.

    My Encore Prime has zero mould degradation and looks as good as a 1984 one, so I'd say "whichever is cheaper". They're effectively the same.

    Long Story Short - The Takara Reissue from late 2001/2002 is the New Year Special, which I was all too happy to find and buy. :D  Said version has an unpainted indigo blue (same as Prime's legs) Roller because the cartoon-accurate silver (painted) one was represented in the original late 1999 reissue. (I had to buy a silver molded original Roller to make the entire works look right.) There are also a butt-load of other extras, including a Matrix of Leadership, plus chain. (I pulled out the chain for the 1st time and wore it on ROTF premier night.)
    The Encore reissue is based on the last (Japanese) tooling, but includes the Roller coated in "chrome" silver paint, white (not silver, or gold) tampoed Autobot symbols on Optimus's shoulders, and (only) the larger rifle, which was originally retooled starting with the New Year Special. It's possible other decals were tampoed, but I can't confirm this. I can state that many Encore decal sheets have inconsistencies with earlier reissue series or original sheets, so Prime's may also have some (planned?) differences.

    TFC #0 Prime includes the small rifle, silver painted Roller and the Energy axe.
    As a contrast, in 2002, we (the Americans) got a reissue based on the 1999 (not New Year Special, as we'd hoped) with cropped smokestacks, and only the small rifle.

    Going by my personal bias, I say the 2002 NYS version is better.
