Seeeing how there's many G1 countinutys I wonder which ones do you like the best? The G1 universes we have right now are

    The Marvel G1 countinutiy

    The Sunbow show G1 countinuty

    The DreamWave G1 Countinutiy

    The IDW G1 countinutiy

Myself I'm not sure seeing how I grew up with Beast wars. But maybe it's a tie between the Marvel and IDW countinuity.

    So what are yours?

I know the most about Sunbow, but I bet its the worst b/c it was more-or-less a commercial to sell Hasbro toys. There never needed to be complicated or logical backstories when new characters were introduced, they just had to be cool looking and powerful so that kids would want them.

Sunbow show and movie by a mile.

I feel like Marvel continuity should be split into two choices: US and UK. My preference between those two would be for Marvel UK, which would be my #2 choice.

Marvel US would be my #3.

IDW and Dreamwave, I don't feel are true G1, coming so long after the fact. They are more like homages to G1. Like a cover version of a song. But between the two... I'd say that IDW's definitely beats the crap out of DW's for stories set in the current day, and from a writing standpoint pretty much overall. But... if War Within counts, then I have to say I might have enjoyed that more than most of the IDW material.

Because the writing wasn't there. It's the inverse reason of why Beast Wars is still so highly regarded, and probably always will be. In spite of the outdated visuals, the writing was -- and remains -- incredibly strong. You can bring people in with art, but you keep them with writing.

War for Cybertron (I know... I know...)

    Otherwise Sunbow
    then
    Dreamwave
    then
    IDW
    then
    Marvel

But there are other G1 continuities: like TF Vs. GI Joe. My favorite of those is the World War 2 story.

Thene there is the (IMHO) EXCELLENT Dreamwave War Within G1 continuity.

I'm going to have to agree with that. I think IDW is doing something great with the G1 feel even if I haven't kept up with all the IDW comics, but it just feels like G1 tribute instead of being G1.

Although as a kid I think I had to go with Marvel for continuity over what the cartoon was doing. The cartoon was great for all the wonderfully talented voice actors on the show, but it felt like the cartoon was just making stuff up as they went along while the Marvel comic book was keeping track of what had happened in the past for a long story.

I like Sunbow -- the G1 cartoon -- continuity the most. I haven't really read much of IDW's G1 continuity to determine how much I like it, and the only Dreamwave stuff I read is The War Within. As for Marvel, I've only read some but I really can't say I like it.

If anyone was to ask me what I considered a G1 homage to be, I'd say Animated.

I've been re-reading the Titan reprints of the end of the Marvel US run, and I do enjoy them a lot. Much more than I did at the time they came out, actually. But there are still things that bug me and I feel were extreme missed chances. Like why are Scorponok and Fort Max basically normal-sized Transformers? There is an entire character and story dynamic missed with these characters because they are portrayed as so small and ordinary.

Also, it seems like in the US series, Furman gave us the Cliffnotes version of his Primus origin, which kind of undercut the sense of scope and mythology if you hadn't already read the UK version. Stuff like that.

I wouldn't call Animated an homage, since it has a completely different type of story with a different kind of set of characters. What I'd call Animated is a love letter to G1. There are tons of nods and Easter eggs, but they're used to tell a new story, not a new version of the old story.

Except that there isn't any singular G1 story.

I'd have to say the cartoon. It's what got me into Transformers in the first place.
Didn't read any of the DW or IDW comics yet. I am, however, finishing reading the original US Marvel series and I've been enjoying them very much. Looking forward to the rest. :)

    Sunbow.

I thought the Marvel Comics were too "Ok, now you die in this issue", and the art never really captured my attention. The sheer death count was unbelievable. IDW and Dreamwave were pretty horrendous.
