Before the AllSpark was christened by it's current name, it was originally going to be known as some sort of Matrix. It's uncertain which (Creation Matrix, Matrix of Leadership, or Energon Matrix) because it was never really revealed to the fandom. But earlier on in 2004 while the film was still in pre-production, John Rogers (the screenwriter of the film before Orci and Kurtzman) posted on the Don Murphy Message board saying what would be in the film so far which included an "Energon Matrix" which would've presumably be the AllSpark we know now. (See the messages here: http://http://www.seibertron.com/news/view.php?id=4314) Another early name was "Energon Cube" which was used by Shia LaBeouf in an interview and by Alan Dean Foster in the novelization for the first film. Which name do you prefer as opposed to AllSpark or do you like the name as is?

To call an ancient Cybertronian artifact an 'Energon cube' is just laughable.

None of'em, frankly. "Allspark" works well enough.

    This.

Referring to it as both "The AllSpark" and "The Cube" worked quite well, in my opinion. "The AllSpark" for us fans who are more familiar with mythology, and "The Cube" for a simpler name for the rest of the audience, as to not overly-bombarde them with sci-fi names and devices. Plus, I like how it adds to the mystery that even the Transformers refer to this mystical device as merely "The Cube". It's like calling something "The Book", "The Creator", etc..

AllSpark. There would have probably been even worse complaints then there already are about the movies if it had been called a Matrix in any sort of way.

That, and I'm pretty sure SOMEBODY in Hasbro's legal division would have raised a big stink about it being called the "Matrix" because of the same-named movies.

    Allspark.

Energon Cube is by far the dumbest name ever in the history of Transformers.

I think that's why Bay didn't want it used... but calling it the Matrix would not have caused an copyright issues.

Yeah, it's been addressed in interviews or bonus material somewhere already.

From what I recall, a mandate essentially came down to the writers telling them to avoid using "The Matrix" by that name so it wouldn't confuse the general moviegoing public or open them up to (******edly unfounded) claims that they'd ripped off The Matrix.

And, fair enough, the Matrix sequels were still pretty fresh in the public's memory at the time of the first TF movie, and people are pretty dumb, lol.

Allspark by lightyears. An energon cube is well, a cube made of energon. The Allspark is something different entirely. And it sounds pretty cool too! ;)

But Transformers: Armada had the Matrix of Leadership called by it's name and they did fine without having any hassle from Warner Bros.. But then again, Transformers: Armada did air on a Time Warner-owned network.

Copyrights were never seriously the problem.

As long as they didn't actually use the word "Matrix" in the title, that is.

Like I was saying, not using the term was really more about not confusing the public.

I just like "The Cube". Not a reference to anything else, but rather, a new concept.

Except for the fact that the AllSpark's cube-shape was itself a reference to the G1 concept of Energon Cubes.
