So, which is better, in your opinion, and why?

I loved Guitar Hero I, but when I played Freebird on Guitar Hero II, I lost it. Greatest. PS2. Game. EVER.

So yeah, one song changed my whole view on both games.

I like 1 better overall, but 2 has some really good songs. But a lot more songs I couldn't care about.

I've only played a little of each, but I'd have to say 2. It's got both Strongbad and Dethklok.

2 if you have friends. The dueling guitar solo on Trogdor is the most fun two people can have with their clothes on.

I think 2 for making hammer-ons and pull-offs slightly more forgiving but still making the songs more complicated overall is the better game. And for whatever reason I still really love Them Bones by Alice in Chains. But that's just me.

Also, the 2 player cooperative is great for getting people who would normally be too intimidated to try the game join in as well.

Overall and especially gameplay-wise, I think 2 is better. Practice Mode is great, playing Co-op is tons of fun with friends.

But I did really like a lot of the songs on 1. Certain songs I love on 2, but song selection-wise I may go with 1.

Now if they released a "remixed" version of 1 with all of the gameplay fixes (practice mode, co-op, etc.) for a budget price ($20 w/o guitar), I would buy it. And if they were really smart, they'd combine both 1 & 2's songlists for the 360 version and Wii/PS3 version (whenever they make those).

And I want a good, inexpensive and widely found wireless guitar already!!!

GH2 is better for play mechanics, but I think the song selection from GH1 is better. I read somewhere that the Xbox version is going to have downloadable content so they could keep adding songs.

I like how Guitar Hero 2 had a crappy controller and the whammy bar busted on mine. And their return policy is ridiculous.

Guitar Hero 2 is a technically better game in some regards - the coop modes are AWESOME, and the hammer-ons/pull-offs are nicely improved.

However, I'd venture to say that GH2 is TOO hard on the HARD and EXPERT settings, especially with the latter songs. It wouldn't be so bad if you could control the tempo of the guitar neck on the screen, but unfortunately, you can't, and you get to have a clusterfuck of notes hit all at once. Just giving the option to speed up that guitar neck (so that it goes by faster and you thus have larger gaps in between notes) would have gone a long, long way in alleviating this problem.
