Okay, I've been wondering this recently. In my quest for fan art of the human female characters in G1, I've come across a decent amount of Carly, Marissa, and Astoria fan art.

Carly and Marissa are natural, of course, being recurring characters. There also seems to be a surprising amount of Astoria love out there (for the record, I love her character), because, apparently, not only do people love her, but "The Girl Who Loved Powerglide" seems to be the one G1 episode that a lot of people remember from their childhoods.

But there's not one single piece of fan art for Jessica Morgan.

Seriously, she's the major human sidekick in an important two-part episode. Why does no one seem to care about her? Is it because she's Season 3? No, because Marissa gets plenty of love. So what is it?

She didn't identify strongly enough with a male protagonist, maybe?

It's probably not that, as the above certainly has never stopped the shippers...

    Wow. Thanks, Chris.

But notice how Jessica seems angry at being in the background and nearly covered? I wonder if that was the artist making some kind of statement.

Anyway, I don't even recognize some of those girls. Anyone care to identify them?

Whoah, nice work naming all of them, Chris!

About Jessica Morgan, good question. I guess everyone was just too focused on Optimus Prime's return and they forgot about her, even tho' she was the one responsible for saving his body from an exploding sun.

Miss Morgan, i hereby praise you for rescuing Optimus Prime's body!

There's also a certain bit of mystery surrounding Jessica. Not the character herself but the voice casting. She was voiced by Joy Grdnic, a woman with seemingly only one other acting credit to her name. Her only other TF role was KSUN reporter Bonnie Carlson in the same episode.

So...why exactly was she cast? Don't get me wrong; she did a fantastic job (the scene where she begs her father to not melt down Optimus' body is heartbreaking), but why was one of the regular Sunbow actors (Susan Blu, Arlene Banas, Linda Gary, Samantha Newark, etc.) not used?

As a side note, Ms. Grdnic is apparently a successful radio comedian:

I'm interested in finding Ms. Grdnic's other work, such as it is.

According to IMDb, her sole other acting work is in a 1982 movie called "Time Walker", where she's credited as "Newswoman" (oh, like Bonnie Carlson?).

Her sole writing credit is the episode "McMunsters" of the 1989 series, "The Munsters Today".

She was a guest in Episode #8.13 of "The Midnight Special" in 1980.

Can anyone help me find these?

It's cause Astoria is a tank baby! He can get slapped by Powerglide and get up like it's nothing then rip solid steel covered control panels with her bare hands off. Hardcore.

I think it just means Kremzeek likes to get his freak (zeek) on.

Interesting tidbits everyone posted so far. Gotta admit myself, Joy looks kinda hot with the short skirt.

On another note, Morgan got hotter with those cyber legs.

I just found out that cowriter Marv Wolfman would reuse the name of Jessica Morgan VERY shortly after, when he wrote the "Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future" episode, "A Fire in the Dark", which originally aired on October 18, 1987, less than six months after "The Return of Optimus Prime". In this case, Jessica Morgan is an artist that was blinded. (I guess she's fated to always suffer some kind of disability.)

Anyway, does anyone have any scripts for "The Return of Optimus Prime"? I'm curious if there's any kind of information in them that didn't make it into the final episodes.

Maybe he had an ex named Jessica Morgan and he got dumped and became bitter and made her namesake suffer in the cartoons he worked on :)

    I've found an explanation here:

"Jessica Morgan is a name commonly used by Marv Wolfman in his scripts. His daughter, first name Jessica, middle name Morgan, claims her father likes to name damsel in distress characters after her. For instance, in the Transformers story arc, "The Return Of Optimus Prime" Wolfman co-wrote, Jessica Morgan is a woman who is briefly paralyzed after an accident."

I just thought of something. Who determined that Joy Grdnic voiced Jessica? I'm not completely doubting the information. I'm just curious.

I just came across a 2001 review on Amazon of the VHS release, and the reviewer claims BJ Ward (Scarlett) voiced Jessica.

Because she was a bit character in a two-parter that only served to be exposition?
