This question pooped up in my mind while watching the movie and the recent animated series. Does anybody know or have a theory about it?

the robot sticks its gas tank into a production line that is hooked up to another robot, they revv up their engines, the machine starts to process, and pop comes a protoform in an egg hanging from the celing, the robots have to wait 9 months before taking the protoform home and for it to process...

When a male bot's connecting rod interlinks with a fembot's receptical port...

Anyway, I think it is mass production and the extra's are all kept in stasis/storage and in protoform form so that they bot can be formatted for whatever need has to be met.

There is no Primus. Primus is a mythical being created to explain the mystery that is Sideswipe's awesomeness.

In all continuities it seems there has to be a spark coming from the MacGuffin (be it called Matrix or Vector Sigma or AllSpark). Whether or not Transformers can sexually reproduce, is another matter (in Animated it's clear they don't, in Marvel they used to reproduce asexually, in the film series it's quite probable they do, they just need the energon created by the Cube to sustain the "wombs").

They're made using a device resembling a Play-Doh extruder. Failing that, energized protodermis.
