Where did the Maximal and Predicon symbol originate from?

This one's been drivin' me nuts. I know the Autobot symbol was supposed to represent Prowl and the Decepticon symbol was Soundwave before Megs and Prime were made, but what about the Maximal and the Predicon symbols?

Does the Predicon symbol sorta remind you of Waspinator or Inferno? It sorta does to me.

If anyone knows, let me know.

Ah, that's right. Forgot about Wolfang, and I sorta made the assumption about Waspinator.

Does anyone know why these two were chosen?

I think those ones were picked because they exemplified the main characteristics of the alt modes of each faction. I.e. the Maximals had the kind of cool mammals/birds/fish, and the Predacons had the icky bugs.

Has it ever been officially established that the Autobot and Decepticon logos are actually meant to be any particular character? I don't really think that the Autobot logo looks that much like Prowl's head design, and the Deception one only vaguely looks like Soundwave.

I had read somewhere that "The Last Autobot" from Marvel comics was supposed to bear likeness to his faction's insignia.

One of the official books stated that the Decepticon symbol was taken from Sound waves head BUT I have never heard ANYTHING off the autobot head being designed up from prowls head, can you please show proof of this.

TFWiki has a reference on it, for what it's worth.

The Soundwave one is kind of hard to miss, it's definitely him. Do keep in mind that this is a stylized symbol based on his original head. Soundwave's face has changed a bit over time, but I have the Encore figure here and it's definitely visible.

Did assume the Predacon symbol looked like Waspinator, but it's also possible that these aren't meant to represent specific characters. The G1 symbols might have been based on characters, but by the time of Beast Wars there wasn't really a need for that, so they might have just designed something that looked cool.

G2 symbols were reportedly based on Pyro and Clench. Owning both, I don't quite see it.

I always though that the Maximal, Predacon and Vehicon emblems were based off more abstract things - Maximals are mainly mammals, so make their faction logo a basic "mammal" head. Predacons were bugs, lizards and the occasional dinosaur, so the insectoid logo embodies that side of their faction, and looks distinct from the Maximal one. Vehicons are seemingly based on the universal symbol for hazardous waste.
