Don't think he did. He just jumped a la Magic Johnson and used Dem's face to swing on. Think his hooks must come out when he get's really miffed. If I got kicked in the face (like in the forest) and was still conscious, I'd be pretty miffed as well!

I think he can possibly shift his weapons into whatever he wants by simple thought and having enough concentration in order for the process to work. Or, those hooks came from subspace, kind of like Optimus did when he shifted his hand into an Energon Axe in Geewun.

Call me picky, but that's my possible belief.

 

Jetfire did say Energon is an energy like no other. So Prime having the ability to change his weapons at will, would seem plausible.

I can't say I agree with that, personally. In G1 it was obvious his hand simply retracted and some sort of internal system let loose the energy to create the axe. He's never used a different weapon, so anything outside of the idea it was a preset form is fanfic preference.

And its the same case with the hooks vs swords. It appears to be presets. He very clearly uses the hooks during his parachute drop in the Shanghai sequence, then swords later, disengages the swords during combat (one into Grindor's leg, which I recall, the other into Megatron, someone else is reporting), then uses the hooks once more to incapasitate Grindor indefinitely.
