When was the last time you bought a Transformer in store?

Today I decided to take a trip down to Toys R Us in South London. It's kinda out of my way and I don't go very often, but I was excited because I was eager to see what new Transformers they had stocked since my last visit. The minute I set foot in the store, I regret ever coming.

It was pitiful. They only had a handful of Robot Heroes and ROTF Scout toys. The only Deluxe figures were five Waspinators shoved in the back. There were no Voyagers or larger, no Generations or Reveal the Shield, and certainly no TRU exclusives. I mean, this is Toys R Us, the biggest toy retail store in the UK! What the hell?

This isn't an isolated incident. Even Forbidden Planet isn't much cop. I was down there this X-Mas and while they did have Generations wave 3, the only figure I am interested in that wave is Soundwave... which they don't have. Pathetic. There were no more Universe or Henkei figures on the shelf, but the only ones they did have were common toys like Silverstreak, Sunstreaker and Galvatron. They never had Universe Hound or Hot Shot, no Henkei Ratchet or Red Alert. If this is a specialist store, then why do they only have the same shelfwarmers you can find everywhere?

I've got to say this out loud:

What the hell is wrong with toy stores in Europe?!

The last Transformer I bought in store was Swindle, and that was over a year ago! Since then there hasn't been a single interesting toy on the shelves. The only time toy stores stock up on TF merchandise is for Movie figures, which I hate. All the really interesting figures are nowhere to be seen, and that pisses me off because you've got places like this in Michigan stocking up on Generations wave 4 and Battle in Space when the UK's biggest city has nothing comparable. So instead I find myself having to order from China over and over again, which is expensive and takes time. Why can't I ever walk into a store and see Blurr, Grapple or Tracks on the shelves? :mad

RTS Jazz and Tracks in a Smyths, Dec 18th.

Going by comments i've read in the thread that revealed Mp Roddy as a TRU exclusive, and the UK sightings thread, a significant part of the problem is TRU UK.

At the risk of stating something you already know, FP source some of their TF stock through Diamond... which is why some branches have had HFTD Wave 3, Generations 3 and, i think, 4.

Universe Hot Shot and Universe Ratchet weren't released by Hasbro UK, and i don't know if FP ever sourced them through Diamond.

On Tracks, did you consider ordering one from Allthecoolstuff?

On Grapple, (i think) that wave is due for a UK release... i've seen some of it's wavemates in 12 langauge packaging, although what toy stores elect to stock that wave... don't know.

The preference given to movie toys over and above others... poor distribution of TF cartoons, and a rather indifferent Hasbro UK who claim (true or false?) they're limited by the fact that they don't know what they're actually going to be sent.

It's a bunch of things, unfortunately.

Oh. Didn't know this thread had a non-American spin to it. But I even buy my Henkei figures in-store.

I've bought hardly any of my TFs in a shop - I think the last one was Animated Blitzwing (yes, that long ago!)

On Dec 10th I bought RTS Jazz and Tracks from Kohls for $10 each.

If it's carried in stores, that's where I buy them. If that's not an option (United, FP, iGear, etc) then I'll turn to the online stores.

Is this the 'Why doesn't the UK get any good toys' thread, or the 'What was the last toy you purchased in store' thread.

Well, it's just after Christmas and most TRU stores have been wiped clean. The usual stuff they have left are the Waspinators and Robot Heroes. Forbidden Planet sold out of Henkei toys awhile back. Dammit, I missed the chance to get Henkei Ironhide, Galvatron and Sunstreaker for good prices. And I missed out on Generations Blurr. Grrr.

Smyths at least are fairly good at keeping up to date on what is actually offered to them.

If we could get reasonably accurate availability dates, i'd be happy enough to wait a month or even two, give the cash to domestic retailers.

But the almost constant uncertainty as to availability means that relying on Hasbro UK pretty much guarantees disappointment.

Hasbro's italian distribution forced me years ago to buy only on-line... If you go now in every Toy Center store (a stores chain like TrU in UsA) in Italy, you'll find only some Rotf, some animated and if you are lucky you'll find a Generations WfC Bumblebee :D  All this at crazy prices !!

And think that in the 80s we italians had the Gig distribution that gave us also a lot of pre-transformers !!! Now indeed we are the last to have the newest Tfs :(

I buy almost all my TF's in store, unless there is a really good deal on-line.
I'm real picky when it comes to paint aps and overall quality,so I would prefer to see them for myself, rather than take a chance ordering on-line and taking what they send me.

Really glad I am not in a country with poor distribution, though even though distribution is pretty great here, it is starting to become more convenient to order online anyway. The last few ROTF figs (HA Mudflap and Red Rampage) took all the "thrill of the hunt" away from me, and most of the time it is now more convenient to just order stuff online for a couple bucks more.

Tell you what though, Im sure there would be some US brothers and sisters on this site who would be more than willing to make some trades with you if you can find the Euro Exclusive Minicon 8-packs. Hell, if you could find a Predaking/Ricochet Robot Heroes set, I would find you some retail stuff over here to swap out in a heartbeat.

I bought a Battle In Space set last Wednesday. I would've bought something today if Windcharger, Scourge, or Kup decided to make an appearance. :D

It was RTS Jazz, about four weeks ago. I'll probably swap it out for Wreck-Gar.
