When was the idea of Optimus having a retractable faceplate first introduced?

In G1, Optimus never really had a mouth (save for when he was Orion Pax). But, the concept of him actually having a mouth that's covered by a face-shield, only when he's in battle, seems to be getting more and more popular, as of late.

I know that this concept is used in the new Prime cartoon, the Bay movies (which is arguably the most noteworthy usage of it), Transformers: Cybertron, Animated, and (I think) Beast Wars.

My question is: When was this concept first introduced (as far as Optimus is concerned)? Was it in Beast Wars? Or was it in some other thing that I'm not aware of?

Earliest I remember was Beast Wars, although I'm by no means a Transformers expert.

Beast Wars was the first to have the battle mask idea.

The first Optimus PRIME rather than Primal figure with a face under the faceplate was probably Cybertron Optimus Prime or Masterpiece Convoy, whichever came out first.

First introduced by Beast Wars for Optimus Primal.

However, Transformers: Cybertron was the first series to really start it all and thus having the Movies, Animated and now Prime with retractable faceplates.

Still don't like Prime Prime's face though......

Beast Wars. Althought it was Primal and not Prime we all know Primal was the Prime in that series and the -al was a play in words.

The first retractable faceplate was Optimus Primal's, but I think he only used it twice. The second was Cybertron Optimus Prime, and he used his almost(did?) every episode. I think the latter had influence on Movie Optimus, since it was airing during production.

I wish Prime's face would go away for a while. I don't mind the two-piece guard Primal and Cyb. Prime had, but Prime having a full face is getting really old really fast.

Machine Wars Primes toy had no mask, though package art would suggest he did. Granted he's a Thnderclash reprint that recycles G2 Primes boxart. It's a super reach of course.

But yeah, agreed on the BW and Cybertron references.

Would agree to the best of my recall Primal had a retractable faceplate, but Cybertron gave Prime the first functional one. I was actually glad to actually see his "mouth" finally :thumb

I've always felt it made sense for his "faceshield" should retract while talking with other bots, in the Autobot base, or speaking with humans. I've always liked that he could use it for protection during battle..although Megs kicked his faceplate and broke it during the forest battle scene in ROTF. While many long time fans don't like Prime without his faceplate 100% of the time..I like him both ways!!

But isn't that one of those "animation errors"?? I know I found at least 1 in Ultimate Doom Pt. 1.. so since it wasn't "intentional" should that count???

As Optimus takes aim at Megatron for the second time ("It's not over yet, Megatron!"), his faceplate disappears for a second or two.

They were going to do it in Energon, but it got scrapped for some reason. The first run of the Energon Optimus Prime toy had a mouth.

I like Prime with an without mouthplate, but I'd would have wished that they for the Movie Prime made it angle up instead of down !

The comics showed him having a kinda mouth underneath when the mouthplate was burned off but he did not retract it on his own. I remember one of the story books having Prime drawn without a mouthplate.

I think, the first intentionally (and sort of creepy :D ) Prime without a faceplate was this:

Beast Wars Optimus Primal had the faceplate, used all of 2-3 times in the first season then lost in subsequent upgrades.

Although Cybertron Optimus Prime popularised it, the whole thing began with Energon Optimus Prime. He had a mouth on the toy, and the stated intention following fan outcry was the full faceplate would slide over the top when he went into battle - but this was replaced with the faceplate all of the time in the final version. Cybertron then introduced the idea on a toy.

Wasn't a mouth of sorts depicted behind the plate in the Marvel comic, when Prime used the Matrix to destroy Unicron, and was later found near death on Cybertron?
