You can interpret what I mean by the phrase 'good thing' as loosely as you like. I got the idea for this thread when I read the title to the thread 'Is defending a TF show or film that you like a good thing?' and I thought I would flip that subject on its head and ask it the other way round.

Firstly I know that nothing should be immune to criticism or could be seen as 100% good in everyone's point of view, so if that if that is true nothing can be 100% bad either. I would also like to draw a slight distinction between criticising and hating on something. the word criticism in relation to a creative work means a 'considered judgment of or discussion about the qualities of something'. healthy, free, constructive and tough criticism is essential as it helps creative types with feedback to develop and improve to combat mediocrity. hating on something is when people forget to describe what makes something bad and instead vents insulting, nasty and un-descriptive phrases like garbage, rubbish, useless, pathetic . I know this website is a largely positive place and encourages people not to troll but if you read the unpopular opinions thread some people seem to be hating a hell of a lot, is this hating ever a good thing? what do you think?

My two immediate thoughts on it are:

Mostly a matter of keeping things tasteful and reasonable, "hating" is usually neither, where as if kept to a dull roar trolling can be fun.

Critiques of media and material with no suggestions to improve are wasted bandwidth. Griping for the sake of griping is made of fail.

If it's done in a fun way that still get the feeling or point across then I'm all for a bit of hatin'. Hating like a dick isn't enjoyable to anyone, but hatin' with a smile in your heart can make a thread interesting. At the very least it shows a person has put some thought into their opinion rather than just crying that something sucks.

By describing what it is you dislike about something, in this case it being really racist it kind of stops being hate for the sake of hate and more a rational and understandable criticism of something. when I mean hate for the sake I mean things like in the unpopular opinion thread someone gave a long list of things they hated and even said something like 75% of transformers fandom should be wiped from existence. I'm not sure how series the person was being but ouch dude that's us

It's good when it stands a realistic chance of leading to broadly agreed upon improvement. That's almost never. Otherwise, it's a waste of time and emotion, as well as a general nuisance.

When it's the truth, and criticism will hopefully lead to a better creations in the future.

    Alternatively, when it's funny.

"Hating" is never a good thing. Busting someone's balls or making fun of something to be funny is one thing, but some people on here get so vindictive and venomous and go out of their way to make sure they tell someone why something they like sucks...and that my friends is never a good thing.

Well hating on something is never a good thing. However there's a difference between hating and criticizing. That difference is some times hard to distinguish but it's there.

If you're criticizing something you're basically stating your opinion about certain aspects of a particular universe that you don't like. Weather it be the designs, the writing, the acting, whatever. And you criticize by explaining exactly why you think they're bad not by simply saying "it sucks". That's fine, that's your opinion but if you can't explain why it's your opinion than you're just hating for the sake of hating.

Really what's the point of having a conversation with someone who is just going to say "it sucks" and not contribute anything else to the conversation?

Well if you want to talk hate :

    I strongly dislike :

    1) Upsidedown logos on Seeker wings
    2) Logos painted with no detail on them (like Armada Hotshot)
    3) The idea that all Transformers add on kits need to be G1/Classics related.
    4) To many Bumblebees
    5) Hasbro calling things Deployers or Mini-Cons that are neither of those things.
    6) IDW

I wouldn't say "hating on" something is a good thing unless it's something like Twilight that is truly terrible and deserves to be hated. Disliking something is always okay, though. Everyone can have opinions.
