They're not exclusive. It was just Japans Universe line. And they're expensive because a lot of people like the more g1 accurate color schemes. Hound, Cyclonus, Megs and Astrotrain especially

You just answered your own question.

They're from Japan and they're exclusive.

Well, while Japan got most of the show-accurate repaints for Universe, America got all the Animated toys, not Japan.

Think how hard it is for the Japanese to get Animated toys, huh?

"Gentei" means exclusive, though their exclusivity (?) differs. Say, Wildrider or Crystal Convoy was basically only available at an event (sometimes they offer a small quantity at eHobby, but only available via draw), and people queue up to get them. Scalpers bring their family and friends to grab as many as they can. Those naturally cost a lot, even if you were in Japan.

Then there are less exclusive Gentei figures. They are Japanese online shop exclusives, and you can order as many as you want, as long as you have a shipping address in Japan. Dirge, Thrust and upcoming Dark Skyfire fall into this group. Sometimes dealers take advantage of the word "exclusive" and charge you lots of markup, because you have no other means to get them.

Something in between are the book exclusives, like Rijie(Mirage) and ghost Starscream. You have to buy a book ($25 or so each), and you can buy two figures per book (again, Japanese shipping address only). Sellers tend to attach the cost of the book on top of the mark up, so these can be costly, too.

I think we did that with the Classics line the first time around, as they didn't get it until we started Universe/Classics 2.0

And figure specifically, I don't think they even got Acid Storm

These are like our Botcon figures, only rarer. They're sold in limited numbers for a limited time. This, plus the cost of importing them, is what makes them so expensive. Though the Wildrider I sold on eBay went for about half of what I paid for it. :(

Imagine how many of them were clammering for the deluxe Cliffjumper. All they got was a Legends repaint.

I think Japan got all the movie toys the US has and them some. They have Buster Prime and the Legends Constructicons that a lot of people, for a time, thought would be exclusive to Japan.

The best US example is Dragstrip. He cost $16 when a deluxe normally cost $10. Hasbro made way too many of him (let's just say 5000) for a store exclusive and he sat in the warehouse. If Hasbro had made him based on pre-orders then they probably would only have made about 2000. That would have pushed the cost up closer to $20-22, or double the normal retail cost. This is exactly what we see with the Gentei line. A normal deluxe cost about $25 (lower run then US, better paint job). The made-to-order Gentei cost about $50. By the time they make it the US they hit the $70-$90 mark you see. And because it's made to order the aftermarket prices are ridiculous.

NGW - Yeah, but according to famitoy, the prices for them in JAPANESE RETAIL STORES will be a lot. Voyagers there are going to be about 3600 yen, which is $40 USD.

No, what I meant was the import price they have to pay for the Movie toys like we do for the Henkei line.

Just started to get into a lot of the import figures in the past year. I am willing to pay the price cause most of them have been great. What has been killing me is the decline of our Dollar against the Yen. But, every time I think about that, I also remember that we get the retail stuff A LOT cheaper than the rest of the world, and get some pretty decent exclusives as well, and that quickly ends my little pitty party.

Really? I thought Animated didn't have enough cartoon episodes for that to be possible?
