Recently got myself a pretty nice flask, but I can't figure out what I want to put in there. I was thinking whiskey, maybe Crown, but my dad said I should use scotch. Anyone have any different opinions?
Your dad is a wise man. I typically have a 12 year Macallan or 10 year fine oak Macallan in my flask. Balvenie 12 year double wood and the Glenmorangie 12 year (sherry wood) are very good as well. If you're looking for older (and more expensive) varieties, I can give you additional recommendations. *edit* That's not to say Crown is bad or anything. I also dig the Irish whiskies (Bushmills, Jameson - even Tullamore Dew) and those would work great too.
Ecch, flavored liquor FTL. 'Least for me it is. I'd go with whiskey, for one important reason. It's one of the only liquors that's palatable at room temperature, and it mixes well with just water. I started drinking it in the service for those two reasons, and now I just love it more when I can get it on the rocks as a Manhattan. But since it's only a flask, I'd spend a little extra and get a decent label. Something like Jack Daniel's Single Barrel, which is what I prefer, or I think Johnnie Walker Black Label or Blackbush are a little better than usual also. But hey, how much drinking in public are you planning on doing?
Are those gonna be at your average liquor store? I know next to nothing about scotch. My liquor store outings usually stop with vodka, kalua, and crown royal.
In the San Francisco Bay Area, a typical wine or liquor store, yes. Most at the local grocery stores. Dunno about TX. If you like scotch or are just curious about it, you need to check out this book. Pick it up used for under $10 if you can (though it's well worth the full price). http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Guid...6408765?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1189028001&sr=8-1 Michael Jackson, the world's leading beer and scotch taster/reviewer, passed away the other day. RIP.
Everclear, or Mad dog 20/20. Seriously I would recommend Southern Comfort. It tastes good by itself or as a mix.
I agree with Drippy, my fellow scotch enthusiast. I would suggest another one as well, a nice 10 year old Laphroaig. However, if you want to go for economically sound, there's nothing wrong with a little Jamesons in the flask. Stay away from Crown, though. Too sweet for my liking.
My brother-in-law brought over a Balvenie 17 year new wood over the other day. http://www.bevmo.com/productinfo.asp?sku=00000081032&Dn=73+168&Nr=Store%3A06&Ntt=balvenie&N=168+0&Nty=1&D=balvenie&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Ntk=All One of the best scotches I've had in a loooong time. Apparently it's also a limited edition.
See I've had JD's Single Barrel before, and I don't think I want anything THAT strong in my flask. I had considered it though, at the very least I could pour it into my coke at restaraunts until I get used to it.
You know how in the movies, the badass sergeant is always chewing on an unlit cigar? I love that, only I'm not a badass. So I thought about rocking a flask with mouthwash when I go back as an officer, and just busting it out and taking swigs when I'm all exasperated.
Sounds lovely. I think I'll have to hit a few of the good single malt pubs here, see ifn they have a bottle.
If I had a flask... I would fill it with fairy dust and sprinkle it about passers by while reciting erotic incantations I think you should do this as well
