I found this interesting. This is a must read for us collectors, and it doesn't matter what we collect. What Your Collection Says About You!
"collecting is bad and you should FEEL bad." yeah, too many of anything's bad, but if you can keep it organized well, there is less a "I'm stupid and crazy" vibe and more a "I like these designs." of course, some people will never think anyone over 15 should have toys they aren't going to scalp, but, just deal with them until you can get your own private diorama.
Or maybe, just maybe, we collect these things because we like to play with them, and think they look cool.
I don't care what that article says, what my collection reveals about me is that I've got far too many Autobots than Decepticons overall (the only line where I own more Decepticons than Autobots is Animated, oddly enough). What's even more shocking is that thanks to my new collection setup, I've still got room for more Classics and Animated Autobots than Decepticons in general!
that's just a woman who wants to see a hurt inner child in me. if i was single i would milk this. she also wrote this part:
It was clearly written by a woman, directed at women, discussing women who have collections. Given that the overwhelming majority of collectors on this site are male (I assume), it probably doesn't apply very well to us.
Yep, I'm a woman and I read the entire article and what a load of hooey!! This is one of those times I call b**ls**t!!!! Besides who would collect Barbie Dolls when you can collect Transformers?, especially Optimus Prime. Besides...I collect Transformers because someone stole all of mine when I was a child kidding.....
Indeed, apparently. Here I thought I collected because aside from being incredibly self-satisfied, happier than I've been in years, comfortably stable and generally feeling on top of the fucking world, toys and stuff are cool. Who knew? Anyone who wants to see it, watch hoarders, but make sure you have some free time, because I assure you it'll make you want to go a clean your entire house top-to-bottom.
No thanks. I saw one episode where this lady's house was so over-ran with "junk" that you could barely walk anywhere in there. It just disgusted me so bad so that I couldn't watch that show anymore. I really don't understand how people can live in such a mess. But back on topic. Yeah.....I'll admit it.....my inner child is hurt. It longs to the love and attention of inanimate plastic figures.....that look awesomely cool......when painted right.
I have a close friend who was living like this. You couldn't see the floor. Dishes and garbage were piled so high on the kitchen counter, that it blocked out all light from the window. She and her sister had a half dozen cats using the entire house for a litter box, because they couldn't find the actual box. It was a nightmare-zone. I would ask her why they lived like that. They couldn't possibly enjoy living that way. She told me that she and her sis were masters of ignoring any problems like housework. That, and her parents used to raise foster boys and would always make them do the cleaning. In effect, my friend and her sis were never taught HOW to clean or the simple joy of getting everything back in order. Thankfully they're both now on the road to better living (with a lot of prodding from me and even a visit or 2 to a counselor). It comes down to people ignoring the little messes until one day it's a gigantic mess and they don't know where to start, so they just ignore it. As to collecting- as a kid I only ever got a few Transformers, because my parents couldn't spare the money. So when I got into Beast Wars and had my own disposable money, I made up for all that. It's pretty much out of my system now and I've even sold off a sizable chunk of the toys I did buy. But I think for most people, we collect out of a joy for the hobby.
