Devastator's "suction vortex" is an allround cool ability. However, it kind of had me wondering... what kind of wind speeds did Devastator generate?

I always assumed there were revolving magnets in Devastator's mouth to move the robots (because those robots must be pretty heavy).

Now, I know that this link may not really answer your question, but maybe it could help:

    Vortex Grinder - Transformers Wiki

I personally don't know what kind of windspeeds he might make. They've got to be pretty large if he can easily suck up 4,000 pound+ objects like The Twins or pieces of the pyramid. (Plus, that's where magnets could come in handy...)

I'd speculate that the wind forces that he sucks objects up with have got to be 100 kmh or more.

Time to get some scientists in here! :D

Again, these are just my guesses, :dunce  and are probably useless. :)

A black hole? Seriously? That's an ass-y excuse.

I'm going to say that those are some REALLY high wind speeds.

Hmm..in the movie it doesn't seem to work with black holes and heat..it's pretty much alot of shredders, tearing everything apart that gets through...

Doesn't say much about the wind speeds though..but they're pretty inconsistent anyway. There's no way human beings would be able to hold on, while a heavier robot would get sucked in, while one house just stays intact :lol

Here's the Fujita Scale, which is used to determine the ferocity of a tornado. I took out the classifications, and just left wind speeds, because that's what we're looking for here.

Looking at this, Devastator's winds would have to be in excess of 380 mph in order to do the kind of damage that he did. After looking at this, and the information on the TFWiki, I feel like it may be more likely that he can generate an artificial black hole inside his mouth.

My guess is at least the upper levels of hurricanes on Earth or even higher since he's taking in stuff from a pretty good distance.

Although I don't see the need for anything like a black hole to generate winds like that. Other planets in our own solar system cook up winds that make our best winds seem like a good breeze. Since the Transformers are aliens with the technology to travel across the stars generating vacuum forces that great don't seem like such a leap that you'd have to deal with the problem of how to contain even a mini black hole.

I'd have to say he had to have generated winds up to 300+ MPH.

i dont think its wind completely. if anyone remembers one of the last episodes of the beast wars series, when megatron used the nemesis' tractor beam/grinder weapon against the primitive humans(i think humans) it was a glowing green color where the grinders were. i think thats where they got the idea.

    I smell a potential Mythbusters episode. :p

I would definitely go with magnets and/or tractor beam technology to gather stuff into the grinders for smashing.

Michael Bay: "I reject your Transformers mythology and substitute my own." :D

Anyways, on topic a bit, one of the few things I liked about Bay Devs was his turbine thingy for clearing rubble. In through the mouth and out through the back of the head. Makes sense, even in terms of design fitting the story need.

I'd actually be REALLY cool for them to do a Transformers-themed episode.

When he is hanging in Devastator's mouth his doors get hit by the fangs and are ripped off, that's why. :)

That black hole story is crap. You're telling me two humans holding a pipe can outlast the suction power of a black hole?

    yeah, uh no.

I'll say it's a cycloning suction, pure & simple. Tractor beams seem unlikely, magnets wouldn't do much good on all the sand & other non-metal items affected as we saw, and the generation of a black hole is just rediculous.
