So what was the very first item (accessory, new head, weapons) that would eventually open the floodgates of all the 3rd party items we all enjoy today?

The earliest that I can remember was a weapon set for Beast Machines made by unicron.com that included accessories like swords for Cheetor, stand for Blackarachnia, and a key to Vector Sigma. Anyone remember anything released earlier than that?

The first full figure (not an accessory for an existing Hasbro product) was Fansproject Defender, yes?

City Commander is what made it popular, I think. (I know it wasn't the first though)

I got the very first 3P item ever made. The Unicron.com Beast Machines upgrade set.

I remember the floodgate, it is internet personality Vangelus that got me in. I was going to buy City Commander but just before I did I watched his Defender review. I bought both and now enjoy buy 3P more than most offical suff.

I would agree that City Commander is what really set off the boom. Their first product, the Cliffjumper upgrade was pretty popular too.

First full figure I remember, though probably wasn't the first, was TFC Battle Rollar.

I still have this guy, and boy is he a floppy mess. :yuck

Fansproject Classics Cliffjumper upgrade kit, was the first upgrade kit I bought back in 2007. It wasn't the first one, I had bought jizaitoys wheelie and cyclonus way before that, depends on what you mean by third party. Neither of those were the first by any means.

I thought that would be the first ever item, as I don't remember anything made for G1-G2 or Beast Wars before that unicron.com set (they did make the Golden Discs and reader accessory for BW Megatron later). Thanks for the confirmation.

I would consider Jizaitoys Wheelie and Cyclonus to be 3rd party figures. Do you remember what year they came out?

I think my first 3rd party accessory must have been the "Binaltech arms" kit for the Alternator/Binaltech Silverstreak, Prowl and Smokescreen which included a sword, shoulder launchers and missiles.

Ya the BW set came after. They were to make a Diagnostic Drone but that never panned out, that would have been the first full character figure.

I wanted that Alt upgrade set but it came and went quick (i wasnt really a 3P guy then) and now they cost too much.

Late 2006-early 2007. They were in the concept stage for quite a while before that though.

Thanks for the info! Seems they were released right around the time the Classics line began, so they would certainly predate Warbot Defender (which came out around 2009-10) and TFC Battle Roller (which seems to have been released around 2008).

The very first I bought was the God Ginrai upgrade kit and after that, the awesome Kit Factory metal sword for the Energon Megatron/Galvatron....

Those 2 aren't even in the same league quality-wise. Jizaitoys were floppy loose junk that if you even looked at them the wrong way, would fall apart.

I bought that God Ginrai upgrade kit from BBTS back in the day
C-310 God Ginrai Parts Add-On - Third Party Transforming Toys & Accessories Miscellaneous, as I just got the reissue and liked the smaller Optimus head in the kit. Never knew about the Megatron sword though, that does look nice! Seems like both came out around 2004...

Seems that was the case with alot of these early 3rd party figures, like TFao mentioned with Battle Roller. Fansproject really set the bar for a better quality toy.

The earliest 3rd party piece I remember is custom long stacks for the US release of MP Prime, that was probably 2004 or so.

Wasn't even the first Fans Project um, project.

I'm fairly certain that the unicron.com BM set was the first 3P item to be mass produced and released. It dates back to the late 90s.

    So question:

With sets like the BM add-ons, how did people know about them? Was it still promoted through the internet?

Unicron.com sold it via their site. I can't remember if other boards promoted it because I use to visit Unicron.com directly back then.
