I saw the movie today and I really enjoyed it, but I have to ask this question:

What was the point of The Fallen?

What purpose did he really serve and was there anything he did that couldn't have just as easily been done by Megatron? I guess Prime needed to kill somebody at the end, but to me there was no real reason for Megs to have a puppetmaster like Darth Vader did.

I don't know, but I expected to go into the movie really liking this character, but he just seemed unnecessary. Starscream & Megatron were the two Cons that ruled the film IMO, and The Fallen just felt tacked on.

I think weak editing left out a load of backstory.

I agree. I loved the movie, but I would have been happier with Megs and Screamer being the two main Decepticons.

The Fallen was the founding father of the Decepticons while he used to be one of the primes. His power might be superior to Megatron but he feared to be killed by a Prime.
So he let Megatron be his field marshal while he stayed low profile for most time.
Megatron might be a powerseeking villain but he sure has respect for the Fallen.

The Fallen wanted to have the Decepticons survive and be more powerful so he wanted to destroy the sun for creating more Energon for them.

Not in the movie. When he wasn't bathing in spaghetti, he was standing on a pyramid doing jack shit.

The way I like to view it is this:

Megatron is the leader of the Decepticon army. The Fallen is not. Megatron has allied himself with The Fallen in exchange for Energon, a source that all Transformers need to survive and The Fallen knows where to find it.

Megatron works for The Fallen in exchange for a Energon supply large enough to fuel himself and his Decepticon army.

I was disappointed with The Fallen, from what he did to the Humans, it looked like he had such potential. He got a few good shots on Prime, but fell in less than 5 minutes. Even if he had to die, it would have been great to have some sort of epic duel between the two.
He could be a plot device to A. Prevent Megs from Dying again
B.Give someone for Prime to Kill.
C.Set Megs up for proper leader of the Decepticons.

He was cool though, just had the strength of a sponge....a dry sponge.

I don't know or understand it either, I kept asking that question in my head during the film what was the point of it, or the motive of the characters. Yes, I know the decepticons wanted to harvest more energon, but it didn't register in my head why. Autobots had a weak interest, destroy all decepticons, which seemed a little OOC to me for Prime. He's not a destroy-all kinda guy, he's a merciful bot (Which explains his loving nature towards the humans, even the douches) Megatron's not one to be bowing and groveling under someone's feet, even if there's something in it for him. I dunno, lots of things didn't make sense to me in it.

The Fallen was the "I'm all powerful, fear me! ... ... I'm Dead." character of the movie. He's the sacrificial lamb for a happy ending. Thankfully they spared Megatron from doing it again this time around.

Mostly unnecessary, but real nice too look at. The dude was old, not as old as Jetfire, so he was in it for the last piece of action. But seemed to really fear Prime.

No, the Fallen and the other 6 Primes are THE OLDEST Cybertronians.

They wanted another bad guy so they wouldnt have to kill Megatron again and have to revive him again in the 3rd movie

Seriously, cant think of any other reason.
