Ever noticed how it's art style was so different from all the other eps of Transformers? Seemed much more anime-ish. What was up with that? Why was it the only ep like that?

Many episodes in season three varied. Carnage in C-Minor comes to mind. I have never seen the episode though, YouTube has nothing.

For season 3 a bunch of different animation teams handled the various episodes, so the quality varied heavily. As said, Carnage in C Minor is an example of the downside, where as the best team obviously handled Call of the Primatives.

You can see it too in "Return of Optimus Prime." The second half of the episode has much better animation than the first (except where Kup drives backwards....)

Yeah, one of the downers of G1 was the inconsistent animation...my candidate for worst episode of G1 was got me to "Carnage in C-Minor".

The animation team that handled Call of the Primitives also handled the movie. As I recall, the normal guys were on strike / unavailable, so the decision was made to plump for the better team.

I always remembered as a kid, thinking "that episode must've been done by the same guys who did the movie" 'cause the quality was a similar level.

Yeah but which team? The movie was done by several teams (hence the varying quality in areas).

The movie still used the same animation models as the television show for the existing characters.

In Call of the Primatives, they used animation models designed by the same artists that drew that Transformers art in TV Magazine, which was why all the TFs looked so stylised, yet had more detail than usual.

Call of the Primitives was handled by Tokyo Movie Shinsha instead of the usual Toei (most of seasons 1 and 2) or Akom (most of season 3) teams.

Random trivia: Tokyo Movie Shinsha (TMS) is responsible for some of the most well-animated episodes of Batman: The Animated Series. Ex-TMS people formed a small studio called Spectrum, who, according to Paul Dini, Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski, they really understood Batman and always went well above and beyond the call of duty in their work.

Before Armada was revealed, I was on my knees praying TMS was going to do it.

TMS handled Batman Beyond: Return Of The Joker, which is honestly one of the best DTV toons I've ever seen.

I hope TMS is in some way involved in future TF projects, but they're probably too expensive.

Agreed, Return of the Joker looks fantastic. And they made it look like getting a flag pole shot into your chest REALLY HURTS :D

TMS was also responsible for "Mighty Orbots".
