What the hell is mpeg4?

    My friend has a band and he sent me a few of his songs that have the itunes icon and opens up into itunes yet doesn't appear... and it won't let me open it up in anything else.

    I think you answered your own question. It's for mp4 players like itunes. Try updating your itunes and see if it'll show then.

    Did he copy these files outside of iTunes, just as MP4 files?

    ...because if he did, I assume they won't work. If I remember correctly, iTunes uses MP4 files. Part of the reason for that is that the MP4 files can be encoded to play exclusively on one person's computer (i.e., since they've been copied to a disk and handed to you, they won't play.)

    ...Now, there are Mp4 to MP3 converters out there, you just have to search for them. Try download.com, I figure?

    Best way to get those files from him is to go the long way around - have him burn the files to a CD, then burn that CD to your computer. Unless you have an MP4 to MP3 converter, I think those MP4 files you got are write-protected for one iTunes user only.

    You can play mp4 files in Quicktime.

    Ebay:
    right click on the file and select open with and select quicktime or windows media. either of those should open the files.
