I know some of the RID bots are hard to get, but what are some real gems to get that are really rare and expensive?

it depends on what rare you are talking about. I mean are you talking about mass produced figs that everyone could get? There are lucky draws that only a very few could get and everything in between. Lots of choices

Well, I guess maybe ones that are not in production anymore, not re-issues, or one of a kinds. That sort of thing.

Love your icon BTW! I can see someone is amped for the film.

    In general.

Store exclusives even if they're crap.

    Event exclusives (Botcon, SDCC)

    Japanese releases.

Figures that came at the end of a line and were not heavily produced (i.e. Cybertron Minicons Wave 4)

Figures that have added fan projects (i.e. Classics Ultra Magnus)

MISB G1s, Diaclones, prototypes, limited runs, Lucky Draws and other exclusives. Also, any figure dipped in gold or platinum, I suppose.

Fort Max goes for a ton. A complete one can go for about $800, and one of it's guns can go for as much as $50.

Don't forget the non-toystore exclusives, like the Vardia Movie Starscream and the DVD Mass Production Noisemaze figures.

There's also a number of Transformers unique to Japan that are pricey and rare, from individual Headmasters to Cassettes that weren't released abroad, to big daddy Grand Maximus, to some of the more recent figures like BWII and BWNeo figures, some of them are rare and hard to come across.

In the US, certain toy store exclusives can be quite pricey, depending on how available it was.

Like others have said, it depends on how rare you want to get. Production samples of the G2 Stunticons supposedly exist (Transfan 2 of these boards has G2 Motormaster) and G2 Breakdown was the first Botcon exclusive, so I would say they qualify as rare but not "one of a kind" rare.

As for toys that had an actual release, Orion's list above is pretty good. I'd probably add Overlord, Black Zarak, Roadblock and Skyhammer (all G1) to it. Especially the last three, due to GPS.

Luckydraws, japanese headmaster heads, while headmaster heads, battle gaia and guard city...depends on how much cash you got to blow and how many hours a day you can put into searching.
