What should the reboot designs look like?

I think you're confusing yourself with the recent AOE and TLK designs. Otherwise, the alt mode parts have been recognizable since the first movie and later phased out starting in AOE.
I love that last Optimus design by Nizzi. That's a perfect blend of blocky but still detailed. It's also not a copy of the G1 design like the designs a lot of people who are posting on here.

Not gonna lie, I wouldn't mind seeing an un-injured version of this, either - kinda reminds me of Armada Optimus a little bit:

I really like the WFC/FOC aesthetic, but I would have no problem with new designs inspired by classic designs.

I also dig the Government Black variation of Christiansen's triple-changing Shockwave design for the TF'07 movie game (even more so than the G1 Purple version in the game - hey, I figure if Bayformers can be allowed to get away with recycling entire CGI models, all's fair):

Now just give us an intelligibly-spoken characterization instead of RAARHRRGLYBRGLY*SHNKed by Optimus*and we're good to go.

Looks like this shockwave transforms into an AH-64. That would’ve rocked.

Yup. KC designed him to change into both an Apache and a modified Howitzer.

Keeping my fingers crossed we see designs and aesthetics like these in the reboot.

Let's not kid ourselves here. In the first movie there were barely any actual recognizable parts beyond a few central pieces. I mean look at Optimus. Can you tell me where his shoulders come from, or the entirety of his legs (not counting the front wheel arches)? Or where the hell his rear fenders go?

It's always been about the illusion that they can change.

They come from inside his body? We don't need to know where everything comes from. We just need enough recognizable parts to see what the respective character turns into.

Another KC design I'd kind of like to see get used - his AOE Grimlock concept (I can't help it, I got to thinking of this one while looking at the images of Grimmy's Cyberverse Ultra Class toy - I know it kinda contradicts the push for "simpler designs", but in this case I think the more organic nature of the design is appropriate since there's no vehicle mode):

Again, give him a fitting persona - as in, the kind of 'Bot who would probably NOT let Optimus Prime straddle him - and I think we'd have a winner.

This is that fun wild 100% pure speculation phase so have a bit of fun with it. With so many designs, third party figures, fan art and all the rest there has to be something where you could go I'd love something like that. Or have fun with like the current design but change this or that. Until something official comes out it's all just whatever happens to be swirling around in our imagination. At one point we had a purple dinosaur that went by the name Megatron so almost anything is possible in Transformers.

A couple other Massive Black designs I wouldn't mind seeing, whether they just reboot straight-up or "requel" from the 'Bee movie:

    Ravage

Laserbeak (for no other reason than to make him look actually bad^$$ instead of like a googly-eyed goofy-dipsh**-comedy turkey)

Devastator (no ***damn balls, and maybe a uniform color scheme - this yellow one I kinda like)

Hey, I love me some G1 toy Prime (own a few) but come on now. I ain't a 5 year old any more, I don't want G1 toy Prime on the big screen, that would look terrible.

I’d love to see some LED-looking lights on them like in the Cybertron games.
