it's almost Halloween, so we gotta start enjoying the season.

my question: What story did your parents/grandparents tell you about where you lived that scared you the most?

    I have 2 short ones:
The Hole that Never Stayed Filled- it's been (finally) buried by the re-routing of a river, but it never stayed filled. a minister was murdered by hanging, and they had to dig a hole so that he could hang high enough to die.
over the years people put things in that hole overnight and the next day...empty.
i have been there myself and it's uncomfortable at the least.

In a little town not far from me is a grave where they say the man buried there plays his fiddle and kicks up the dust. even in the daytime, i don't like being there.

Just because you can only see them in your sleep, it doesn't mean that's the only time that they can see you...

I'm starting to wonder what happens if you attempt to sleep in that hole overnight.

Nothing my older relatives told me ever scared me. But I'll nevertheless relate the best scary story they ever told. It's a folktale from the old country. You might have heard other versions and even rip-offs; this is the original.

A young scholar is up late at night, studying for the Imperial examinations. He hears a knock on his door, grabs a lamp and goes to answer it, but finds no-one outside; just darkness and stillness. Thinking one of his competitors did that to disturb his train of thought, he huffs off back to his books.

By the by, a second knock comes. He grabs a stick along with his lamp and strides over to the door in a rage. Again, he finds no-one. There is something written on the outer surface of the door, though. The red ink is still wet - it looks suspiciously like blood - and the message is written in a childish scrawl, like what a small boy might write.

"Thanks for letting both me and my sister in. We can't enter a house without being allowed in, you see."

The scholar then feels something inhuman breathing down the back of his neck. A second puff of breath, also from behind him, blows his lamp out.

My parents never told me anything scary. Except forbidding my video games or giving me an arrest.

actually, people have filled the hole with sand, and then camped in a tent on top of it, and the next day, the sand was gone. so it has been done.

and that story is pretty terrifying. he should have never opened the door...

"The Valley" in DE and PA here is home to a cult house and "Zoobieville", a village of midgets. If you drive back there at night, black SUVs chase you out. The Dreads, perhaps...? Mwahahahahahahaha!

One night as I was about to fall asleep in my bed, i heard my father calling me. his voice was coming from the kitchen so I went downstairs to see what he wanted. As I was passing the broom closet, it opened and a hand grabbed me inside. It was my dad. My dad tells me: "Don't go into the kitchen." Then he whispered to me: "I heard him calling my name too.

That's some freaky stuff...but the only things that scared me were the movies poltergeist and the Freddy Kruger, after a while I grew out of it. After watching house on haunted hill I realized I can't watch the horror/ gore stuff; same goes for the three stooges since I have been working in a jail...I just don't like bringing work home.

I'm kind of a party pooper. No story my parents have told me really scared me, and I'm pretty hard to spook. Nothing in the media has scared me, really. Well, I guess when Dran0n was a wee lad, he terrified by "Bigfoot" recordings and footage. Oh, and when something jumps at you with that stereophonic punch of sound in movies. I fucking hate that. Gets me literally every time. And the idea of banshees freak me out. A screaming ghost? Get the fuck outta town, man.

Oh, yes. This one is pretty freaky. With dat head of a horse and the hollering. The story about her in Weird U.S. is pretty interesting...
