I thought it would be a good idea to use the robot heroes as chess pieces. Obviously I'm only going to need one king and queen for each side, but I'm going to need 2 knights 2 rooks 2 bishops and 8 pawns for each side also. Ideally the pawn choices will be packaged with each other so that I don't have to buy 7 extras of figures I don't need. Mathematically and characteristically, which figures would be the best choices for each piece?

I'm thinking that I'd use the gun toting Prime for the autobot king and megatron for the decepticon king. Utlra magnus would make a good 'bot queen and maybe soundwave for cons? These are just a couple of my own thoughts. If you could provide your suggestions in a readable list format then that would be helpful, thanks!

    EX list:
    autobots
    king:
    queen:
    bishop:
    knight:
    rook:
    Pawn

    Decepticons
    King:
    queen:
    bishop:
    knight:
    rook:
    pawn:

For the Pawns, Jazz and Thundercracker could be repainted (if you're so inclined) to make generic car-bots and Seekers. Even unpainted they or Mirage and Starscream seem to have more common body types.

Funny, I'm doing this exact same thing! :)  It's weird, I'm not even that good at chess, but I love chess boards... they're a great exercise in character design. Anyhow, if you're limited to Robot Heroes, it's gonna be hard to get a perfect lineup, but here is what I would suggest:

    Autobot Side:

    King: Optimus (obviously)
Queen: Grimlock (because he's high-ranking, super-powerful.... and would hate being referred to as "Queen" when he thinks of himself as "King").
Bishop: No really good fits here, but I would probably go with Jazz because of his capacity as a high-ranking adviser
Knight: Rodimus or Mirage... they're both warriors, Mirage is an aristocrat, and Rodimus is even referred to as a "cavalier"
Rook: Ultra Magnus, because he's big, solid, and sturdy, like a castle
    Pawn: Bumblebee, of course

    Decepticon Side:

    King: Megatron, of course
Queen: Starscream, of course... he's evene occasionally been portrayed as female
Bishop: Soundwave, for his capacity as loyal adviser who stays close to the throne
Knight: Skywarp and/or Thundercracker... warriors who can "fly" over other pieces
Rook: Shockwave... like Magnus he's big, solid, and loyal. And he tends to end up "guarding the base."
    Pawn: Ravage or Insecticons

Of course some of these might have better options when the next wave of RH comes out. Personally, I'm hoping someday to make a board where each piece is a unique character, even the pawns. Here's my dream-lineup:

    King: Optimus
    Queen: Grimlock
Bishops: Wheeljack and Perceptor (science taking the role of religion)
Knights: Jazz and Prowl in vehicle mode (faster and more manueverable), or Sideswipe and Sunstreaker in vehicle mode
Rooks: Metroplex and Omega Supreme (because citybots = castles)
Pawns: Autobot minibots Bumblebee, Cliffjumper, Brawn, Huffer, Cosmos, Beachcomber, Powerglide, and Warpath

    King: Megatron
    Queen: Starscream
    Bishops: Shockwave and Soundwave
Knights: Thundercracker and Skywarp in vehicle mode
    Rooks: Scorponok and Trypticon
Pawns: Casseticons Rumble, Ravage, Laserbeak, Frenzy, Ratbat, Buzzsaw, Overkill, and Slugfest

Sadly, many of those don't yet exist, and I'll be shocked if all the necessary citybots, minibots, and cassettes are actually ever produced. I've considered supplementing it with PVC Heroes or Cybertron, or even little toy cars and jets for the knights, but that doesn't seem like an ideal option either. We'll see... someday I'll make a set to my liking. Good luck with yours! Post pics when you finish it, I would love to see it! :)

I'm not really up with the Robot Heroes, so I'm not sure what's out and what's not yet, but as far as characters are concerned, I've got a few ideas, and I daresay most could be 'bashed with a bit of ingenuity if they don't exist already...

    Autobots:

    King: Prime (natch)
    Queen: either Grimlock or Magnus
    Bishops: Prowl and Jazz
Knights: Warriors; maybe Sideswipe and Sunstreaker, possibly Bluestreak
Rooks: Defensive types; offhand Trailbreaker and Ironhide spring to mind, alternatively citybots like Metroplex and Fort Max
Pawns: Minibots; I'd suggest Bumblebee, Cliffjumper, Brawn, Windcharger, Gears, Huffer to start, then redecos/tools for the others (Pipes, Tailgate, Outback, Hubcap, Bumper, Swerve)

    Decepticons:

    King: Megatron
    Queen: Starscream
    Bishops: Soundwave and Shockwave
    Knights: Starscream and Thundercracker
Rooks: Again, possibly citybots like Scorponok and Trypticon; or maybe Constructicons? I'm trying to think of suitable defensive specialists, but it's not really something the Decepticons do...
Pawns: Several possibilities; I'm thinking either Cassettebots, Insecticons, or (my personal favourite) generic Seekers

Maybe this will help. Here is the breakdown for SOTA's G1 version of the chess board:

Of course, that game board has pieces that are styled like HOC figures, not RH.

Now you'll end up with extras pretty much however you decide to go. To avoid that, I would suggest following WhiteMocha's lead with unique characters for each position.

You also may want to check the resource database for upcoming 2-packs for character ideas.

I might have something for you later.

This will probably be utterly useless to you, but I'm tossing it out there, just in case you're willing to be flexible.

Pawns are generally meant to be generic and faceless, so if you're willing to bend the G1 theme rule here, HTS has a way for you to save a little cash for this project:
    Robot Heroes 8-pack

You could call them drones and save $13 (the same amount as 2 more RH packs).

Just throwing it out there for the idea of making the project a little less expensive for you. Based on what you have for the theme, though, I expect you'll reject the idea.

Maybe I'll pop back in with a good idea sometime later.

Jeez, that seems almost tailor made for what I want to do. I might do that if I can't decide on a proper selection from the G1 versions.

so far this is what I'm thinking:
All the above ideas are pretty good, but I don't have several hundred dollars to throw at this project, so in the consideration of costs this is what I have as a potential line up based on which figures are packed with which.

    Autobots
    King: Gun version Optimus
    Queen: Ultra Magnus
    Bishop: Jazz
    Knight: Grimlock
    Rook: Bumblebee
    Pawn: Rodimus

    decepticons
    King: megs
    queen: Starscream
    bishop: Soundwave
    knight: shockwave
    rook: Unicron
    pawn: insecticon (shrapnel)

so If I'm doing my math right I'll need
1 OP vs Wavage (already have)
    1 Megs vs Magnus
    1 Starscream vs Mirage
    2 Soundwave vs BB
    2 Grimlock vs Shockwave
2 Unicron vs Matrix OP (already have 1)
2 Jazz vs Thundercracker (already have 1)
    8 Rodium vs Shrapnel

so I'll use at least one figure from each box and end up with leftovers to the extent of:
    1 Wavage
    1 Mirage
    2 Matrix OP
    2 thundercrackers

or about the equivalent of 3 boxes. Alternately, the decepticon rook could be T cracker and then I wouldn't have the two leftover primes or crackers. I could also use Wavage as the decepticon queen but that doesn't make much sense. So if my calculations are right, using the original set up I'll have to spend:

    $6.00/box * 19 boxes = $114
I'll end up with 3 boxes worth of leftovers worth $18.

I dunno what shipping would be on that number of robot heroes, but I'd have to get them from HTS because retail stores are just not carrying these around here anymore. I kinda wish I'd bought these with that 20% & free shipping coupon that would have saved me $23...
maybe I'll just wait until they have another coupon...

anywho, I think that's probably the best way to do it right now. If anyone can make any suggestions that might save me some cash on buying all of those, then I'd appreciate that.

    /megapost

Edit: I just tried setting up an HTS order for all of the ones that I would need for this, and including shipping, it comes to $103.23 so I think I'll just save up for a bit and count on the RHs not being that popular.

Have you thought of using the PVC figures? I think Alpha Trion would make a great bishop.

My opinion on what you have here (which is only my opinion in the end, not what's going to be more enjoyable for you):

Go with the Thundercrackers over Unicron. It just seems wrong to have Starscream as a more powerful piece than Unicron (plus that whole less leftovers thing).

Switch Jazz and Grimlock. Grimlock's more of a straight-forward attacker, whereas the knight moves about with more subtlety. Jazz fits the knight movement better, what with dancing around the board.

Switch Soundwave and Shockwave. Again, Soundwave is the one to take a less-conventional approach, due to all of his unusual capabilties. That fits more with the knight's movement pattern than Shockwave. Shockwave is a highly-intelligent character, but is usually portayed as having a more linear way of thinking. Additionally, when dealing with Shockwave, you're facing down a huge honking gun, something that will hit from far away. That seems to fit the role of Bishop better.

Rodimus really doesn't make for a good pawn. Shrapnel is the perfect choice for one, though. If they had a Bumblebee vs. Insecticon pack, that would be perfect. Unfortunately, perfection is not available, so this seems like a good idea. It also works for all those people who hated that Hot Rod indirectly caused Optimus to die in the movie. Now they have a whole bunch of Hot Rods to vent their frustration on every time they play the game. :lol

I was thinking about this a little more after my inital post and unicronsupreme's take was the best I could think of as well, considering his restrictions.

I did come up with a alternate "Movie" edition for you, though. It doesn't cover the pawns, but I like the references it evokes:

    Autobots:
    King: Rodimus
    Queen: Arcee
    Bishop: Ultra Magnus
    Rook: Grimlock
    Knight: Jazz

    Decepticons:
    King: Unicron
    Queen: Galvatron
    Bishop: Soundwave
    Rook: Shockwave
    Knight: Thundercracker

Oh, and this list includes RH packs that aren't out yet, but have been announced.

Completely random thought concerning Hot Rod as a pawn: when he reaches the other end of the board he can become Rodimus Prime.

No, in chess when you get a pawn to the other end they can become any piece other than a king (in my experience, a queen is often chosen, but that's just my experience). Alright, fine, so arguably that wouldn't make him Rodimus Prime since Optimus would still be the leader, but you get the idea.

Of course, I could be wrong on these chess rules.

No, you're right on the chess rules, but there are two things here which would make people disagree with you on those rules.

    1. They don't know that there are rules other than the basic ones.

    2. They do know, but all they're aware of is castling, because they watch chess players who do know of the other rules and will try to prevent the them from coming into play. Promotion (and underpromotion, which is when the promotion trades for a piece other than a queen) makes a pawn too dangerous, so its pretty normal for a good chess player to prevent that from ever happening at any cost. Getting a pawn across the board to be promoted is even more difficult when you consider the En passant rule/maneuver.

So, you're right on the Chess rules, but since this about using G1 Robot Heroes for pieces, your suggestion doesn't quite work out, since they haven't made one of RP yet (or shown it to be coming out soon).
