This is in no way meant to be a political post...

I went to Vegas this weekend which is about 5 hours from me and I'm paying 3.73 to 3.79 a gallon and on the road saw as high as 4.03. How high will gas prices have to get before you actually cannot afford to drive to work or just drive period? Do you think this will happen to you?

I can't afford not to go to work. So never. Bring on $10 a gallon. It just means I won't buy frivolous things like Transformers.

My job is thankfully only 4 miles away from where I live. I could take a bus, but the stop is like a 3/4 of a mile walk away. I think it may come to taking the bus if it gets really bad, but I got a small car anyway so the numbers are in my favor at the moment.

Before this thread becomes political and SUV bashing and people ridiculing those who can't afford gas...

What we are seeing here is a mass exodus of teachers. Teachers from all the surrounding areas flock to our county because we pay more. The county knows this and has a formula that shows a 'ring' on a map that shows past what area does it become more economical to teach at their home county for less money than commute to us. That is shrinking and we are losing good teachers. They are reaching a point they will lose money working here opposed to making money.

At some point if it costs you 50% of your daily paycheck to simply drive to work, people will consider lesser paying jobs closer to home opposed to higehr paying jobs farther away.

I live in Minnesota. Unless I go out and get a dogsled to use for half the year, I'm driving. Luckily, my car gets 50 mpg. But I'm going to start biking to work next week when my schedule changes. Plus, it's better for me and saves me a trip to the gym.

Pfft, four dollars a gallon. You people have it easy. In Canada we're paying closer to five. It's going to go up to six this summer.

When our prices are more expensive than European gas, ALL European gas.

correction when the price is above Pound sterling's current price, then you have a right to complain.

Eh, I gots me a 86 Honda prelude, love that car!

but honestly I work maybe 20 minutes away and if gas goes up too much, I just might invest in a scooter.

Doesn't matter how bad I look, I'll save a nice chunk of change I think.

My wife said I'd have to park my truck when it gets to $3.50.

    Today it's a $3.69 and I just filled up.

Needless to say, after a few events at work I'll be trying to get a new job about 60 miles closer to home.

Trust me I try not to just go driving or leave my car/truck running...

Well if I stop driving I won't be able to get to work, and thus I'll lose my job and have even less money for everything so I rather take the hit on gas and make money for my family. Things like toys may have to be removed from my budget if this thing keeps up though. I think I better start selling some of my collection soon so I can put the money toward the toys I'll be buying this year.

Not possible. We do not have the luxury of a robust public transportation system where I live. To survive I must have a car, I paid $4.08 a gallon at my last fill-up, and while it hurt, it didn't hurt as bad as I thought it would.

The only way for me to survive with not driving would require me to get a job in a big city and move in walking distance to a subway/train station so I could get to work that way. And I don't see that happening.

I take a train/bus combo 2x daily for my commute, which costs me $40 a week, so I consider myself lucky for now. I'm sure the rising cost of fuel is going to impact the cost of my commute through higher fares soon enough, though.

I started taking public transportation to work about 6 months ago. Instead of filling the tank twice a week, Im filling it up about every week and a half.

We currently have 3 scooters between the 2 of us and once the weather cooperates enough we'll ride to work and what not. It's crazy to think that $3.00 a gallon now would be cheap!

I'm not complaining, and don't plan to. Gas is cheap IMO.
But hey, I'm just now getting into the driving world, so I never knew any better and probably never will, its just one of the things my generation is going to have to deal with, good thing I'm staying in school right? =P
