There are supposedly over 180 genres of electronic music. I don't think anybody can possibly keep all of them straight and not get confused. Even you messed up and said "hardcore" twice. I can understand the frustration at having everything lumped together, but the more something gets overcategorized, the less likely it is that people who don't actively follow it are going to even bother trying to get it right. We used to just call it all "techno", but enthusiasts didn't like that either, because "techno" refers to a specific type of electronic music within which numerous other genres also dwell. Enthusiasts (and some artists) either don't understand that this is a problem for some people or simply don't care, and continue to overspecialize everything. It gets to the point where from the perspective of the uninitiated, the opposing attitude looks effectively like "if you can't write a thesis about it, don't fucking mention electronic music at all". I know all about being frustrated with people who don't know what the hell they're talking about, but being so uptight about it seems silly to me. Most music lovers here aren't nearly so anal. Someone might be an avid fan of a tiny specific genre such as emocore and nothing else, but he's not likely to punch you in the face for just calling it "rock".

I don't use the word "electronica" myself, but I'm not even interested in learning twenty different kinds of house music. I love Daft Punk, but I couldn't care much less what brand of music they make. To me, it's just Daft Punk. A lot of musicians don't even like their music being categorized in a genre at all. When you get down to it, it's all arbitrary distinctions that don't really help anyone but people who like arbitrary distinctions. :dunce

Right on, I agree with you 100 percent. I find that all that sub-categorization going on gets really silly and just lends itself to a lot of negative connotations. People get this shit in their head that they HATE certain genres and won't listen to anything associated with it, when a lot of times the various artists grouped together don't even really sound that similar. I know to a point the categorization is useful to seperate basic styles, but when you're down to "dark anthem hybrid trance" or whatever... is it really that necessary?

    YES!

That's probably the last 'new' band I picked up, but that was like over a year ago now, so I didn't really deem that recent. But what the hell..there ya go.

Last newish band I can remember is Violation. Good thrashy-death metal, German I think. I've been mostly exploring bands I already know lately, getting the back catalogs and stuff.

Shinedown - I've had their "Us and Them" CD for awhile and just got "Leave a Whisper". Excellent music, unique sound and two of the few discs that I'll actually listen to all the way through.

Rammstein - Great beats and, although I don't understand 90% of the words (they could be singing about puppies, rainbows and love for all I know), the vocals are melodic and they have a really cool sound.

Red - Simple name, but their music FAR from that. Saw their cd at the local christian bookstore, sampled it, but decided to pick up another cd. But their music kept haunting me, so I finally found them on rhapsody and OMG, WOW. I sat down to listen to the whole cd and it's amazing! The song "Let Go" is a perfect blend of rock with strings and the vocals are to die for. Anybody who is fans of rock, must check this band out. They are on an independent label right now, so they are extremely hard to find on the internet, but so worth looking for. The album is called, "End of Silence".
