I remember as a freshman in college this show blew up big time. Even I was hooked lol. Was it the violence that made it so popular? Is it considered one of the most popular animes of all time?
I loved the art design and aesthetic. That's what keeps me coming back. Gotta get a good dose of gold spiky hair every once and a while.
At a younger age, I could remember it just being all about the action. There were just so many epic fight scenes, and a memorable cast of heroes and villains. It was just testosterone bundled in one anime. Sure, it may not hold up as a quality series compared to some of the stuff I tend to watch nowadays (well, at least I like to think so...), but it's still one of those classics you can't forget.
when it was first coming out here anime was still something new and different. Mainstream tv didn't really play anything like it, and the internet was not set up yet for the bandwidth necessary to transfer entire series like today. The file compression wasn't very good either, so even a sub youtube video of a single episode would take up hundreds of megs of space. Back then anime was also a lot more hand drawn I think as well. It's since lost a lot of that distinctive style I think as well
They've been airing Dragonball Kai on Saturday mornings and I've been watching it and reliving all the memories. It was so badass, and at the same time, it was so cheesy and over the top that it just can't not be appealing to people who like that kind of thing. Me being one of them. Or to answer your question with one word: Vegeta
Because, Team Four Star used subliminal messages to make us like DBZ so that we would support DBZ Abridged here in the year 2010. Subtle marketing, to say the least.
If I ever have a son, i'm going to make sure that he grows up to be a real man by reading HNK to him before bed.
I always hated it, I tried to watch the show but just found it mind numbingly dull. I suppose it's the action that draws people to it, it certainly had some interesting ideas.
I remember watching it on UPN before it was so huge. The characters were so original and I loved the story (especially the Saiyan Saga). I remember Vegeta was my favorite character because he was so ruthlessly awesome.
DBZ was mega popular long before Mr. Satan/Hercule was introduced. Honestly, when I think about it, I'm not sure what made it so popular. All I know is that I absolutely loved it back in the day and still do.
Ongoing, high octane action series with an interesting art design at a time where there were very few
