Like, what do the restaurants in your area do really well?
Japanese and Italian are wonderful here. Mexican food is pretty terrible down here.
Cajun and seafood to the best around here. So do some Japanese restaurants.
Trust me, as someone that doesn't care for that kind of slow-cooked artery-clogging down-on-the-farm kind of food, it gets old fast.
There isn't a restaurant I'd classify as "Great" at any particular cuisine within 15-20 minutes driving of my neighbourhood. Its pretty lame.
There's an insane amount of Greek restaurants around here. Never tried any though..
A Chinese pork dish called bak kut teh.
No specializations here.
Minutes away from me is a small pizza and ice cream parlor that my mom works nights at, plus there's another small restaurant recently opened up under new management that seems to be doing well -- don't know exactly what specialties they have or how good they are, I'm tempted to go there just once to see what it's like.
But the closest towns -- yes, towns... there's at least 3 towns within short driving distance from where I live -- all have well-known fast food and pizza joints, plus a few local restaurants... all dealing mostly with typical American cuisine. If I want to expand my horizons, I'd have to go half-hour in either direction -- to Ann Arbor or Jackson, MI -- to get to the foreign cuisine restaurants.
However, I don't dine out all the time.
Buffalo Wings. We rock you socks when it comes to Buffalo Wings.
A fair amount of pretty good Indian restaurants
I'm willingly to bet my area is like most areas, a mixture of local and chain restaurants. Only two chains that I really wish we had over here, Checkers and Krystal.
I live in Buffalo.
I wish there was a Checkers where I live too. There's only one in the airport, and if that isn't successful, then I guess there's no hope of another one.
seafood. we got some kickass seafood places here
Italian, asian/chinese/japanese etc. and mexican.
No restuarant can beat my grandmother's pasta though. It's all homemade from her garden. Freaking excellent. You could live on that stuff lol it's how my great grandmother is still alive and kicking at 97 years old.
My area is mostly shitty (term of endearment!) diners and an increasing number of gross commercial restaurant chains.
However, my town has two pretty good Mexican places and a one amazing middle eastern place. We also have a solid pizza place that's been here forever, but nothing beats shitty (see above) New York City pizza.
Unless you are from Buffalo you don't know what real BUFFALO wings tastelike
New Mexican food. Which is mostly Mexican but smothered in delicious red or green chile. or both.
