I collect MPs and Takara Legends. I keep the Legends MISB, but I do open some of the MPs (not all only because I haven't gotten around to it yet.)

I usually open them after I have paid for them :p

Seriously, though, I'm not the 'mint in/on sealed' type. I get the appeal, just not for me.

I share the sentiment that transformers are unique in that part of the appreciation comes from transforming them and enjoying the different modes.
So yeah, they get opened and transformed at least once!
I also collect some BTAS line, those stay in their package.

Not a collector of vintage TF toys, so anything I buy, I buy for my display and me.

    Nothing stays in its box.

Always open, otherwise what's the point? MIB/MISB is not for me.

I open pretty much everything. There are a few figures that I've been saving for a special occasion, like a fine wine...except, I haven't quite figured out what special occasion warrants opening a figure, so they've been trapped in cardboard for quite a while.

Tear apart the boxes and play with the figure to my heart's content. I might only save the box if it's a G1 original, but even then, I'll still open it.

Depends on what kind of collector you are. If you collect because you love transformers, deciding on whether to open them is obvious. Rip that box to pieces like christmas morning!

If you're a collector who sells on the second-hand market, you keep them MISB to maximize value.

About 95% of my TFs are loose or opened boxes. I just have a few sealed specimens in my collection.

open everything. Not a fan of sealed figures for me personally. I can look at pictures of them on the internet, I don't need something i can't touch around here

Back when I started collecting as a adult in 1997 I did open a few G1 Transformers, but since then everything G1 stays MISB.

...i can understand those who curate MISB collections: i totally geek out when i see a decades-old specimen and the time-capsule effect, especially in bulk, sometimes takes my breath away...

...that said, a huge part of my appreciation for MISB artifacts is how they represent the visceral experience of opening the package, pulling the figure and its ephemera, going through its instructions step-by-step, stickering and accessorising the virgin toy for its first time...even when i buy vintage MISB toys, i don't hesitate to crack them open and play with them: i'll take reasonable care of the original packaging and store it away safely, but the toy always comes out to be played with as originally intended...

...essentially, i collect for my enjoyment, not for some abstract future value that a second-hand or third-hand owner might reap after i'm gone...

I just had an epiphany. MISB Transformers only have value because they were used incorrectly.

I'm no hardcore collector, so I've opened whatever TF toy I gotten. Sometimes I'll take care not to rip up the cardback when removing the front plastic shell though, especially when there's character art at the back.

Something I've noticed rather recently is a small feeling of guilt when I take a cutter blade and "violate," a MOSC toy from around 5 years ago (think ROTF and TF2010). It feels to me like I just wasted what would have been a fine acquisition for a mint collector, and that I could have just shopped around for a loose or secondhand version of the same item. Anybody else feel that? o_O

If I had the money and it wasn't so hard to find the figures in the first place I'd buy two of everything, one to open and one to keep in package.

...the irony's not lost on me whenever i open and play with my vintage MISB toys...

Open, inspect, touch up some paint if I have to, tighten loose joints. Play and display!
