Recently I've just purchased Robotech: the macross saga on DVD and it's pretty good, and I want to see other forms of media on robotech. (And it's Japanese shows)

I know there are fans of this franchise here, so can anybody recommend a robotech/macross show to me?

As far as what can be bought here in the US.

I would pick up Macross Plus movie/ova I prefer the ova just due to length, but the movie has some new footage.

Other than pluss all we have is Macross 2, which is not cannon. It is fun watch but easly avoidable.

If you are ok with fansubs. I would watch it in this order

    Macross Zero
    Orginal Macross
Macross the Movie - Do you Remember Love - A movie that is shot in during Macorss 7 time frame.
Macross 7 - Well worth watching
    Macross Plus
Macross Frontier - With the movies afterward.

First off, if you haven't seen the original Macross(not the bastardized US version) you need to start there.

my ranking of preference goes like this:

Original Macross + Do You Remember Love
    Macross Frontier + Movies
    Macross Zero
    Macross Plus

I can't recommend Macross 7 at all as I found the idea of a Valkyrie pilot playing guitar in the cockpit ******ed. I didn't watch more than a couple of episodes.

It's easy to understand if you think of it like this:

    Japanese versions = good

    American versions = crap

This goes for ANY anime that was ported to US TVs in the 80s.

Makes sense, where would I watch the shows you recommended?

I like all of them in their own way. If I had to rank them, it would be like this:

SDF: Macross (the series Robotech used)
    Macross 7 + movies & dynamite
    Macross Frontier + movies
    Macross DYRL (movie)
    Macross Zero
Macross Plus (either the 4-episode OVA or movie versions)

Plus is the one I have the most difficulty with because the visuals are superb, the music is easily my favorite macross-related music of them all yet the characters are so absolutely loathsome that it makes it hard for me to watch. Guld and Isamu are two of the biggest pricks in all of anime.

Do You Remember Love is hands down my favourite. They're all very good in their own way except 7 which I think seems to be a more "love it or hate it" affair.

If you're not opposed to free media and have any web skills at all you should be able to find plenty of avenues to watch/download anime. I wish I could just dump a bunch of links in this thread for you, but that's against the TOS.

My problem with 7 is that Macross is in the "real robot" genre which, unlike the "super robot" genre, strives to have a more realistic portrayal of technology and its use. The whole "playing guitar in a fighter cockpit" aspect of 7 is not even trying to be realistic. The serious tone that has always been a hallmark of the Macross universe just wasn't there and so I couldn't get into 7 like I do the rest of the Macross series.

Well to be honest the two best introductions to Macross itself would be Macross Plus- A self contained OVA series that also had an alternate retelling as a movie, and like others said, Macross Do You remember Love, which is self contained as well. Do You Remember love is easily found on torrent or on any anime streaming site, since it legally can't be released in the US.
