When sideswipe said "a little mexican standoff", the Chinese version translated it into something like "a dual". I'm not sure whether it's right or wrong, and puzzled what does that mean.

A mexican standoff is when two or more people stand facing each other at a certain distance, then shoot each other to death and they all hope they survived.

Actually it's when two or more sides point their weapons at each other but for some reason can't fire. Hence why Sideswipe, Ironhide and the Dreads dropped their weapons.

Mexican standoff means a situation where gun wielders are stalemated by a situation where all the participitants have their arms drawn.

Little mexican standoff means the same thing but with midgets.

Completely wrong... it's called a STAND-OFF, not a Shoot-Out. Basically, what makes it more tricky than a duel (a stand-off between 2 people) is that when there are more than one (in the case of DOTM, 4) than the first to shoot is at a disadvantage and becomes the immediate target. Therefore no one wants to shoot first, hence a stand-off.

In russian dubbing Sideswipe said: "Hey, the situation is seems like a stalemate (standoff in chess)". In my opinion it is a quite good translation, because russian viewers don't know anything about mexican standoff :)  My father play chess for a long time and he was pleased a such translation.

A situation in which no one can emerge as a clear winner.

Pretty much what everyone else said, but here's another take on it:

That's actually a really good translation, especially for a Russian audience.

I was under the impression that guns needed to be pointed for it to be a "mexican" standoff, and that a "mexican" standoff usually implied more than two people involved.

Actually, here's a good question: Why would the Dreads know what a mexican standoff was? Or would they be like "what the fuck is this guy talking about?"

Why would the Dreads be speaking English?

They weren't, IIRC. But that's an even better question, would they UNDERSTAND what Sideswipe and the Autobots said in English? If not, why would they bother to tell them to drop their weapons in a language they don't understand? Was the dialogue actually in Cybertronian, but portrayed in English for the benefit of the audience?

A Mexican standoff can also be when 4 cars arrive at a 4-way intersection at the same time. No one knows who goes first.

They were in the street in that scene.

    It can't be a coincidence.

I'll have to take your word for it. I rented it, only saw the scene once.

That's what I thought. They wouldn't understand him anyway because they don't understand english.
