My top two favorite comic-based movies are Watchmen and The Dark Knight. Watchmen for being the best direct adaptation of a pre-existing graphic novel, staying faithful to the source material and keeping the spirit of the original work in places where changes were made. The Dark Knight is my pick for the best adaptation of a particular superhero, even if not based on any pre-existing story. Just a damn good movie overall.

Runners-up would be Batman Begins, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker and Heavy Metal. Many of the other comic-based movies out there, I either haven't liked or haven't watched (ie - anything featuring Marvel characters), so my list is a bit short.

Gotta say Batman, Spiderman 2, and Dark Knight. All 3 just do pretty well at capturing the essence of the characters.

Another one who mentioned Akira, i grew up with Akira since 15 years ago early when i was 14 going on 15 after hearing great things about it in magazines including Newsweek on it's anime article and had to rent it, it frickin' blew my mind out of teh water and had to buy it on video. I even got it on laserdisc when i was 15 and had the merchandise to it as a teen including the manga from my city's various comic stores.

Suprised no one has mentioned Cemetery Man (based on Dylan Dog), Ghost in The Shell, Riki-Oh The Story of Ricky, Fist of the North Star, Ichi The Killer, Oldboy, History of violence, Flash Gordon etc.
