    It's a plastic case around a toy. That's it.

    You're essentially paying $60-$70 additional dollars (or more) for a toy which, technically, has no imperfections to either interior or exterior. The AFA system is nice for toys like vintage Star Wars figures that are MISB(mint in sealed box) or MOSC (mint on sealed card), because those are genuinely older toys and preserving them means that, yeah, they're gonna be worth even more.

    The AFA folks "grade" toys based on their packaging, the box exterior, etc. and then give it a score. People can sell the toys based on the AFA score since they now know - since it's been certified - that their object is mint and/or as close to mint as you can get.

    ...but, really, unless you're like a MEGA-fastidious MISB/MOSC collector who REALLY wants to boast about one random-ass toy, it's not really worth it.

    Long story short, it's an extra $60-70 or more for a plastic case and air. That's it.

    ....plus there appears to be some lack of continuity on their grading scale. A Misb Hottod with a flap crease could come back with an 85, but a case fresh or near case fresh example with a very small push in a bottom corner could come back with an 80.

    In instances where the owner of the toy isn't happy with the grade they got, it's not unheard of for them to remove it from the case, and send it back resulting in the receipt of a higher grade than before.

    In a way collecting MISB toys represents a goal that is less than fully attainable - a factory seal is no guarantee of quality in a mass produced item. Taking that factory sealed toy and encasing it in plastic doesen't add any certainty that the toy is actually perfect.

    I don't really see the returnable value on AFA stuff myself.

    Though, I also find it amusing that more often than not, someone going "Hey guys I got this AFA'd!" gets a bucket of "MAN YOU WASTE YOUR MONEY STUPID GUY HATE SEALED JEEZ WHAT CRAP JUNK" dumped on his or her head. ;)

    Myself, I'd AFA my whole collection if it were sealed, and then cement the boxes together as a really badass house. Paint the outside, and indoors you have the coolest 3D wallpaper ever.

    AFA = Awfully F*ucked-up Assholes

    While it's true I have not had direct dealings with them (and therefore may be technically out of line expressing the previous sentiment) I have indeed seen their ridiculously-graded items here and there and spoken with people who have dealt with them (had things graded) and they pretty much agree.

    The odd thing is is that I have yet to meet anyone who has actually bought one of these over-priced items. Anyone want to stand up and say "I did." An explanation might be nice as well. I just dont get it....

    Have patience, will save money (at least, that's what I tell myself)!

    About as inaccurate and inconsistent a grading system for toys as you could find. Its BS, and I have about 25 AFA transformers.

    I don't even want to know what I would do if presented with a room of AFA graded figures. I already get this intense itch in the middle of my shoulder blades when presented with a room of MISB/MOSC and a nearly irrepressible urge to tear them open.

    Yeah, but understand I didn't get gouged for them either. I basically bought AFA pieces from my friends, inspected them myself, didn't care what AFA said. I sent a few to get graded when they first started doing it. But as pieces that were significantly better (same exact MISB TF, just better) showed up with worse grades, I said "PISS ON AFA AND THEIR INACCURATE AND INCONSISTENT GRADING!" Thats really the whole of it there. BTW, I have an AFA 95 Browning HIIIIYAKACHA!!! :throw
