I know who they are, Starscream and his bunch. But that's not the question. What I mean is, where does the term seeker come from and what are their rolls?
Is "seeker" a G1 terminology, or a fan-based terminology? Are they basically hunters that go out looking for prey? To me that's what a seeker means.
Pardon for the dumb question..............................but curiosity................

It's from an old catalog and was turned canon. Obligatory TFWiki Link

I like going with the movie comics version, pretty much Starscream's version of the Wreckers.

The origin of the term is a weird one. It was in widespread use even in the early days on the online fandom - lots of people were simultaneously using it, but nobody knew where it had actually COME from. So that made people think it was a fan-created term, until it was discovered in use in - of all things - a 1984 JC Penny's catalogue. It's still baffling to think that one appearance in such an obscure source led to such amazingly widespread use, but it seems almost impossible to connect the dots at this late stage.

I think it started as a fan-based term, and has since been adopted by the mainstream official fiction, though I'm not sure when it was first used. It seems like the internet can lay claim to that one... unless there was another really influential way for fans to converge before the proliferation of the world wide web... Botcon maybe?

Presumably, it just sounds cool. Maybe it was chosen because it connotes heat seeking missiles? Or "seek and destroy"? Sounds cooler than "The Sweeps" at least, don't it? :D

EDIT: Oh yeahhhhhh... that catalog thing. I totally forgot about that!

I'v always thought it kind of went along with "seek and destroy" as a jet would do.

Somebody also mentioned the Sweeps. Makes me wonder what they do as well. At least we know that term came from the toon's.

Interesting that there is real no confirmed origin of the term Seeker other than JC Penny! LOL!

The Sweeps would presumably sweep away all resistance associating with Megatron reformatting as Galvatron and those who went against Galvatron.
The Seekers, from what I've read, were supposedly designed to seek out Energon, which makes sense.

Yea, that makes sense. Except we rarely seen them actually do that.
I almost want a picture of a Sweep with a broom and a maids outfit. LOL!

I prefer to think of the Seekers as high-tech birds of prey, since they are aircraft after all.

Aw yes, The Bird of Prey. My favorite ship from the Star Trek series. :)

I always assumed that "Sweeps" referred to a hunting pattern... as in to "sweep" an area. Considering that Scourge and his team are often referred to as hunters and trackers, this makes a certain amount of sense.
