I remember these being shown off as mysterious new characters in Takara's Animated line. Ever since then it seems everyone has forgotten about them completely. Can anyone shed any light on this?

They're not new Animated characters. They're prototypes from a pre-Animated proposal called Transformers: Heroes. Left is Hot Shot, right is Rhinox. They never made it to production due to Heroes being dropped in favor of Animated.

i think they're hand made protos, for Animated before it was Animated, when it was still TF Heroes, and they hadn't finalized the look, rhinox and hot shot i think was who they were supposed to be

I thought Hasbro haven't owned the Hot Rod name for ages. So any character toy wouldn't be Hot Rod simply because of that. It's why the name Hot Shot came about in the first place.

Wasn't Hot Shot called Hot Rod in Japan????

Either way, both were conceived as the type of character who was somewhat in-experienced but showed potential.

IIRC, Hasbro wanted some sort of movie connection, hence the hot-head role being filled by BB, and Rhinox was basically replaced by Bulkhead.

A couple more are shown in Allspark Almanac 2 - Jetstorm and Jetfire. Looked a bit more like the concept art seen for them. Looked cool but I generally prefer what was produced.

Remember when it comes to these guys, they're hand-made prototypes. If they had been released they'd have looked a bit different and less detailed too.

And in response to the actual question asked, the molds never existed in the first place.

So don't go holding out hope that these could get repurposed elsewhere. They'll fall into the annals of history in Hasbro's vaults, along with Transtech Cheetor and Starscream :) () and Animated Hot Shot and Marauder Megatron :) :) ().

The Rhinox mold looks amazing IMO, but the Hot Shot/Rod one is very drone-looking and deserves to be kept as an unmade prototype.
