As the title suggests, we have a lot of blockbusters coming this year, and I was wondering, what do you think the top 5 movies of the year will be, dollar wise? My thoughts are

    1) Harry Potter 7.5
    2) Transformers Dark of the Moon
    3) Kung Fu Panda 2
    4) Pirates of the Caribbean 4
    5) A toss up between Green Lantern, Thor, and Captain America

Now what are you talking about - Oscar level top 5, or box office top 5?

    For box office, definetly

*Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II
    *Transformers: Dark of the Moon
    *Possibly Cars 2
    *Thor?
    *Kung Fu Panda 2

As for Oscar-nominee-for-Best-Picture level top five? No idea. I had no idea last year that The Social Network, or any of the films nominated, would be nominated. You just don't know until you see them.

EDIT: Of course, how in God's name did I forget Pirates of the Carribean?

Tough one, because there's a lot of big stuff coming out this summer. I'd go with:

    (1) Harry Potter 7.5
    (2) Cars 2
    (3) TF: DotM
    (4) Pirates of the Caribbean 4
    (5) Toss up between Captain America, Thor, Green Lantern, Kung Fu Panda 2 or something completely unexpected. I can easily see Captain America, Thor and/or Green Lantern bombing...but, at the same time, I could see one of them becoming a break-out hit too.

The only one I'm spending any money to see at the theatre will be TF: DotM.

All of the above from a financial stand point.

I just realized we are all putting DOTM on the list.
Other than this being a TF board, why would you expect the rest of the world to consider even going to DOTM great after how ROTF was trashed?

    Just my opinion, but...

    1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2
    2. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2
    3. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2
    4. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2
    5. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2

It's honestly the only movie coming out this year that I really care all that much about. Nothing else really seems worthy of seeing at theaters this year. At this point I might not even bother to go see DotM at theaters, tbh. I'll probably just wait for it to come out on DVD, buy the cheapest copy available, and then see it for the first time. Might even wait for the price do drop a little, or put it on my Christmas list this year, lol.

Because a lot of people don't rely on critics to form their opinions for them?

The top 5 grossing movies?, or the top 5 critically acclaimed movies? Usually they are far different..usually.

I do believe DOTM will be in the top five grossing, no doubt. :popcorn
Along with HPotter pt 2 and POTC4.
Other than that..not too sure at this time.

As for the top 5 critically acclaimed..who knows? Can't figure out critics most of the time.. the ones they love, I hate and vice versa.

Lots of people say they didn't like it on the web, like they're part of some weird club. Everyone I know that saw it liked it. And it obviously didn't suffer too much from negative word-of-mouth, because people just kept on seeing it. And then when it came out on home video, I doubt all those millions of people bought a movie they didn't like.

So yeah, some people may have not liked it. Probably not enough to make any real dent in DOTM.

    1) Harry Potter DH pt 2 (not liking the movie but it's the last one so it'll make money for sure)

    2) Thor - I think it'll be the most successful marvel movie since Iron Man 1, setting the stage for rest of superhero movies from Marvel this year.

    3) Pirates of Carribbean 4 - Proving that the franchise is alive and well even without its two costars from first 3 movies.

    4) Kung Fu Panda 2 or Cars 2 my bet is on the former

    5) Transformers 3 DOTM - Will not beat first one in terms of BO but still pretty good.

... well, Megan Fox not being in it would be a start.

This. I think Cars 2 may hedge out Potter, but only because of the wider appeal to the younger kids.
