    The movie explained that Autobot is a abbreviation of Autonomous Robots.

    If that is so what does Decepticon means?

    Taking another name for transforming from TF's rival in the 80's (Gobots) I think this tittle makes sense.

    Decepti-Con, Deceptive Converters.

    Anybody else with an idea on what Decepticon means?

    It's the word 'deception' with a 'C' thrown in. Much like Constructicon is the word 'construction' with a 'C' thrown in.

    I like it. It fits, in the same simplistic way, like the way we call people who commit "terrible" acts terror-ists.

    That seems like a fitting match. Hopefully they will tells us what Decepticon is an abbreviation for in the sequel.

    I find it odd that a few here think that the root word of Decepticon being deception is "saying stupid shit". Actually it's not stupid... it's probably THE most obvious thing about TF's since 1984! Maybe you all were being sarcastic, I don't know.

    The root word for Decepticons is "deception" because:

    - its obvious;

    - it means: "designed to deceive or mislead either deliberately or inadvertently";

    - the concept that Autobots transform as a means of camouflage while the Decepticons transform as a mean of deception so to stab enemies in the back is just awesome.

    Exactly.

    And (to state the obvious) before the '07 movie's deeper explanation, Autobots were called Autobots because they turned into autos.

    I like Deceptive Converters. Another possibility could be Deceptive Robotic Commandos, suggesting the military origin of the Decepticons.

    Are you admitting that you didn't get the joke and apologizing here, because it doesn't read like that, so it's kind of confusing.

    It's a reference to a joke in one of the Transformers videos by Dr. Smoov.
