What do you rate the G1 cartoon 0-10 with 10 being excellent??
10/10 - I love the cartoon, it's light hearted good fun.
It looks cool and was FUN. 10/10.
10/10 - i love more meet of the eye mini saga
Yes - I acknowledge every bad episode, animation error, etc. that people like to use as evidence that the G1 sucked!
But, with that said....the G1 cartoon was the start of it ALL, and it totally mesmerized me as a kid, and every other Transformers fan of my age that is on this site right now!
So...after all that...what is my rating? I give it an 8. Why? Because no show is perfect, and there are just WAY too many animation errors to give it a 10, lol.
I rated it a 4. I put rated it that high mostly because of some designs and season 3.
10/10 - The. Best. Ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Without rose colored glasses the show is pretty bad. It has a fantastic high concept but the execution was, well a children's toy commercial.
I'm going to give it 10/10 because despite its toy commercial origins the show created memorable characters with a lot of humor and charm and even managed to occasionally sneak in some thoughtful moments. More than many shows made for adults do frankly. I think cartoons like this are the definition of "more than meets the eye." Even at times to their own creators.
2, and I'm being generous. It's downright painful for me to watch now. Hell, it started getting painful to watch when I was 12 and decided to rent some old G1 VHS tapes. I couldn't believe the show wasn't as great as I remembered it being.
if other people still have fun watching it and like it, cool. but I don't.
Grew up with G1. Love it. Own it. It will always be my favorite because of that connection.
And it's good... For a 1980s liscensed-toy children's cartoon. Outside that realm and against a number of modern shows... Objectively... it's not great.
The animation is passable... Most of the time... by the standards of the era, but it rarely passes the "decent" mark. The writing has some solid moments, some good stuff, but it has a nearly equal amount of dreck. There are a ton of better written boys action cartoons. The voice acting is probably its strongest suit. Brilliant characterization and memorable voices abound.
All in all it was a pretty good show for its era, but drops down to around average when compaired to many shows since. I'll give it a 6 out of 10 and feel I've been generous.
-ZacWilliam, I still love it with all my heart, but I can look at it objectively too.
People talk about "rose colored glasses" - and that's totally true, I admit that fully. But, you can't look at them through "rational adult eyes" either.
It was meant to be a fun kid's cartoon, and I still view it as such.
I'll give it a 4/10, but I feel like I'm being too generous. It has some good episodes and can be enjoyable, but a lot of it isn't very good and it's pretty much a generic show to sell toys (same with the Marvel comics, but they were much better than the cartoon). Then again, I don't have any nostalgia for the cartoon, so that's probably another reason why I don't care for it that much.
Yeah, and I thought it was bad at 12, as I said. That's still "kid" age.
I don't give it points off for being a toy commercial. Everything on Television is a commercial, no exception, that's the point, lol. Beyond that is whether it has redeeming value as entertainment. I think Megatron and Starscream's banter holds up very well. Optimus Prime is an admirable character that doesn't get preachy (usually, hehe). And I think its clear why the Autobots are good (they have compassion for the innocents around them) and why the Decepticons are bad (all they care about is themselves). On a kid's show that is very important to outline from the beginning.
It's still good fun to watch - I don't bother taking it seriously, because it wasn't really meant to be taken seriously! It's a kids cartoon meant to sell toys!
But it was also the start of a great franchise, and it set the baseline for everything that was to follow. 10/10 for me.
That's cool, man - I hear ya! To each his own.
Were you 12 in 1984/1985/1986...or was it a "retro"-kinda viewing of G1?
1. There are many episode i like but most of those are in season 3
I was 12 in 1994.
So by the time you watched it, it didn't compare to stuff you were watching on TV already?
That does make sense, I can see where you're coming from there.
