I was have this discussion / heated debate on what should be considered a sport and I felt, what greater avenue to discuss further than on the internet.
    :duel

This stemmed from my though that the Olympics were bringing in ridiculous 'sports' that should not be considered sports. The Olympics use to mean something and now it is really just an over commercialized suck fest.

So in a nut shell my criteria to be a sport it has to be:

    1. A physical activity.

    2. A defined winner (not by judge’s decision)

This would effectively take out things like Poker, ballroom dancing, Ice dancing, diving, and horse riding.

    Any thoughts?

As Tim Wilson once said: "If you can't break your nose at it, then dammit, it ain't a sport!"

    He was talking about golf.

"Any golfers here? Golf's a sissy sport. Hell, golf ain't even a sport, golf's a game. Anything an 88 year old man can whip my ass at is a game."

According to my high school, marching band was a sport. We could use it, like lacrosse, football, etc, to replace P.E.

i remember my entire family (many peoples) having an argument over whether miniature golf is a sport or a game and what the difference between 'sport' and 'game' is. i don't believe it ended well.

I love seeing billiards, darts, poker, and bowling on ESPN...none of which are sports.

Golf is a sport as it requires mental and physical exertion as much as say, baseball, on many levels.

When the golf GAINS A SOUL AND SATAN BLESSES THE BALL WITH LAVA-INJECTED POISON FANGS OF DOOM AND IT COMES AFTER THE GOLFERS WITH THE HATE-INDUCED FURY OF A THOUSAND DEAD SOULS--

er, uh...I dunno. I guess, like, if they see their ball rolling into the water, they might take off at a light jog. Other than that, I don't see golfers doing much athletic legwork.

i dunno. the modern golfers do work out to increase their drives these days.

they may not run on the green but the new generation is taking advantage of physical prowess, post-tiger.

but gold scores points cuz they get to drive those neat-o carts.

If you golf with my friends you gota run to not get run over by the cart...

Golf to me is a past time, an activity that requires skill, but very little in physical strength or fitness.

Honestly, I think Baseball is on the borderline. Any "sport" where blatantly fat men can go and be considered athletes should be looked upon with suspicion.

    Also, it's dead boring.

I'd call those bar sports, they're sports, but not in the "traditional sense." They don't require much strength, with the exception of bowling, but they are competetive in nature, as well as require practice to improve and all have a clear winner at the end of the match.

Walking 7000+ yards in (typically) hot weather while being able to hit 65 or 70 excellent golf shots takes little in terms of physical strength or fitness?

The 3 largest sporting organizations are the International Olympic Committee, Federation International Football Association, and the World Chess Federation.

I agree with you...to me the above are not sports but games. To me a sport is where so sort of physical activity is involved, not just mental.

I'm surprised some people consider chess a a "sport".
