It's been years since the '86 TF the movie, and something has ALWAYS bugged me. Why a Winnebago? You have the power of the Matrix. It has the knowledge and wisdom of all of the Primes and the power within to destroy Unicron. Now feel me out for a sec, Unicron has the power to reformat Megatron and some scrapped up cons into Galvatron, Cyclonus, Scourge, and the Sweeps. So if the Matrix can defeat that power, how the HELL did a flashy Hot Rod turn into a family camper?  Which brings me to the point of the thread. Anyone have any ideas on what Rodimus Prime could have been converted into other than the "ship" from Spaceballs. The more pics the merrier.

I love Rodimus Prime's alt mode. It's one of my favorites in all of G1.

    same here

and its not a Winnebago. Its a whole lot cooler

I certainly doubt the designers were like "well we have a new Prime character. Lets have him transform into an RV. Yeah!"

More like their take on a futuristic truck

none the less, his alt mode is cool! and i love it!

thats why i'm shelling out $200 for the MP toy and not waiting for the Hasbro-trailerless version

    CUZ HIS ALT MODE RAWKS

The idea was that the Winnebago represented Hot Rod growing into adulthood, responsibilit.

IIRC, in the original draft, Prime's V/O specifically says something about him doing this.

The first pic is of the Helicopter/Semi from short lived 80's tv show Highwayman. A great show! You win the bizarre trucks! Plus it was the only show to start Australian Superstar Jack-O!

Yeah, it's really not a great alt mode but I never saw it as an RV. It's a futuristic truck. I wish we could find some of the designers inspiration behind the alt mode.

Actually, they were. the guy that designed him recently did an interview where he said it was all about him growing up, putting the sports car days behind and becoming an adult.

    but it still looks awesome.

I think his alt mode looks quiet awesome, sure the toy is a little goofy, but the on screen of it is awesome to me.

The fact that his altmode is a Winnebago with an impractical design is one of the many, many reasons he failed in the eyes of fans as a leader. I don't know what he should have been, but it doesn't take a hell of a lot of imagination to come up with something better than what they did... Any kind of heavy transport truck with sharp angles and lots of mass would have been better than the flaming winnebago.

Ya know I really like energon Rodimus' alt mode

    Jet powered super truck ftw!

And its easy to say now what he shoulda been but you also have to remember that Rodimus was a futuristic design from a 1980s point of view.

Although I did find a very nice, sleek looking concept for a white semi truck the other day. Can't find the link right now tho :/

I always saw it as a futuristic cargo truck. Essentially the 1984 looking to 2005 version of a custom UPS truck.

Even a heavier/larger version of what Animated Cybertron mode Ratchet and Ironhide become.
